After IV, we have Houses of the Holy. But wait, that's not V...

Why did they actually name albums after IV?

I really don't know. Just got tired of numbers I guess?

And why did they name it after a song that is not on the album?!?

But Houses Of The Holy was recorded at that time. It just didn't make the cut to be on the album.

Actually, I believe the Zeps would say IV is untitled. In an interview I read recently, Plant said he refers to it as 'the fourth album'.

I've heard it called Led Zeppelin IV, Zoso, Runes, Four Symbols, Untitled, and The Album With The Cover Sporting A Photograph On A War-Torn Wall Of An Old Man Seemingly Stooped Over, Loaded Down With A Batch Of Straw On His Back...

It may be that Zeppelin had very little to do with naming their albums. Some record company stooge might have had a hand in that. At least as far as the first three.

When they were wasted. Which was like 90% of the time.

It couldn't have anything to do with the Record Company as Page and Grant insured during contract time that Zeppelin retained more control of their own production to a huge extent (to the point we're they got away with printing nothing not even the bands name or an album name on the fourth album). Also they were under their own record label from Physical Graffiti onwards so they controlled that also. The decison to name the albums was probably coz....they felt like it.
