Todd Rundgren Warns Trump Supporters Not To Come To His Shows

Todd Rundgren says he doesnít want Trump supporters to come to any of his shows and doesnít understand why they would want to come anyway.

In an interview with Variety, Rundgren was asked by Chris Willman about two fans who walked out of one of his shows after the opined about the American demagogue. ďIf I had the power, Iíd say: If youíre a Trump supporter, donít come to my show, because you wonít have a good time,Ē he said. ďAnd also, I donít understand your frickiní values. Because Iím not singing about that. If you donít understand that basic thing, youíre just fooling yourself. I guarantee that in this show, if youíre a Trump supporter, you will likely be offended. Let the buyer beware! I mean, if you canít take a joke, or you canít admit that youíve made a mistake, you donít belong with the rest of us".

Who cares?

I'm sure Hillary supporters probably aren't too welcome at Ted Nugent concerts. I personally wouldn't go to either of these guy's shows.

For the record, how would Todd or Ted know who you support unless you have a T shirt with one of the nominees' faces on it.

They really don't know until the show starts.

On this new album ‘White Knight’ Rundgren has recorded the song ‘The Man In The Tin Foil Hat’ with Donald Fagen on vocals about the demagogue. The song features the lyrics ‘The man in the tin foil hat is tweeting like a teenage girl” and “He is writing cheques to his accusers with those tiny little hands”.

Re: Todd Rundgren Warns Trump Supporters Not To Come To His Shows

Like I said, I wouldn't go see either Nugent or Rundgren if you paid me. When I go to a concert, I want music. I can take the occasional political song or anthem, but when the artist goes off on a rant about Washington or whatever, it just gets obnoxious.

This is the main reason I likely won't be seeing Roger Waters this summer when he comes to Sacramento.

In my opinion Roger Waters music trumps his political views.

More evidence that professional entertainers are just that - as opposed to being logical hardheaded businessmen. Can you imagine Coca-Cola, Ford or Kellogg's truncating their market by half?

Years of drug abuse can take their toll on brain cells.

Then of course there's the old adage "Shut up and play Todd. I'm not paying good money for your political opinions. I can get informed opinions in newspapers, magazines and elsewhere. I'm here for a concert."

Somehow fame gets into too many musicians' heads. All of a sudden they think they have meaningful insights outside their own particular area of expertise and that for whatever reason the rest of us are interested in these insights. Well sorry boys. You're all just court jesters to me.

And it's not that celebrities aren't every bit as entitled as the rest of us to their opinions. It's just that their opinions are no more relevant than that of the valley girl next door.

Re: Todd Rundgren Warns Trump Supporters Not To Come To His Shows

I've been to several Rundgren concerts and not once has he mentioned anything political during his show. That said, if you've never seen him in concert you're missing one of the best concerts you may ever see.

Re: Todd Rundgren Warns Trump Supporters Not To Come To His Shows

I'm not very familiar with Rundgren. But in the case of people like Roger Waters, Neil Young, even Bruce Springsteen, I totally would understand that perspective. Politics is part of their music so if it's not your bag, that's fine, but don't go to the shows and get upset over stuff that you had every reasonable expectation to see coming. Expecting an artist to just "shut up and play the songs" is reducing your favorite artists to nothing. A cover band is gonna play the hits and go home. When you see the real deal, you should expect them to bring to the stage the same tenacity and self-determination that made them into a great artist in the first place. They are not a jukebox and should not be expected to perform as such. It's more valuable to see something personal on stage, instead of the band acting like they punched a time clock before walking out on stage.

Of course Rundgrens not a Trump supporter, he doesn't want to work, he just wants to bang on his drum all day.

Actually I heard Rundgrens not a Trump supporter because he's not Russian.

Re: Todd Rundgren Warns Trump Supporters Not To Come To His Shows

Old Todd's wedged on a nostalgia bill with Carl Palmer's "Holy Shit, I'm The Only One Left Tour" and "Karaoke Yes." Seems counter-intuitive to disinvite a potential audience from a bill that will likely struggle to sell out. Todd, perhaps you can convince others through your absorbing (no doubt) political discourse to "join the resistance" through ideals and passion as opposed to "don't show up if your candidate won."
