Re: Forgotten Bands Of Prog Rock

Anyone's Daughter - On the Brain label
Argent - Rod Argent and Russ Ballard together in the same band. Had a few hit singles, but their albums were underrated
Atomic Rooster - A faultless band who never got it wrong, other than failing to rise with Yes and ELP
AFT - Never got beyond the clubs
Baker Gurvitz Army - Adrian Gurvitz and Ginger Baker in the same band. Baker's drumming was at its very best
Birth Control - Also on the Brain label, as were the early Accept
Cafe Jacques - Produced by Phil Collins, but remained obscure despite being surprisingly good
Captain Beyond - Only made one real album and should have been as big as Deep Purple
Caravan - Ignored at the time, now a cult band and much copied
Druid - One of the first and best Yes-copies
Egg - The late Clive Brooks before he joined the Groundhogs
Eloy - Tended to be ignored at the time, but now another cult band
Frumpy/ Atlantis - Progressive and funky
Focus - Perhaps not forgotten, but if only Jan Akkerman would reunite with them, they could again achieve greatness
Gong - Strong spacey musicians, possibly held back by their weirdness
National Health - Again, never made it out of the clubs. A bit ELP-like and great live
Greenslade - A great live band and Dave Greenslade's musicianship never fails to amaze me. Trapped in the clubs, they also failed to rise with Genesis and ELP. Lack of a strong singer in the early days did not help.
Steve Hillage - Not so much forgotten as lost to techno
Horslips - Quite well-promoted around the time of The Tain, but tended to fade despite strong albums. Although their American influences were quite evident, my guess is the US did not understand them
Jane - Another Brain label band
Man - Tried to cash in on the American West Coast sound, but always a cult band
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Probably impaired by line-up changes and changes in fashion
Nektar - Roye Albrighton was an underrated guitarist, and they never made a Dark Side of the Moon
Neu! - Backing from John Peel was not enough
Novalis, chicke, Führs & Fröhling (SFF) - More Brain
Obiymy Doschu (Rain's Embrace) - A band from Ukraine. I do not know what happened to them
Quintessence - Ignored in the way of Spooky Tooth
Saga - Unique Canadian band who mostly failed to live up to their early live promise
21st Century Schizoid Band - Took on the original Crimson mantle, but subsumed by the later Fripp lineups. It was good to see Ian McDonald back where he belonged
Skin Alley - Nick Graham from Atomic Rooster

Re: Forgotten Bands Of Prog Rock

Quintessence - very Eastern religion focussed (at least, the one album I've heard, Indweller, is)
Sweetwater - late '60s fusion of rock, jazz & classical
Flo & Eddie - Zappa fans will dig these mothers!
Procul Harem - everybody knows Whiter Shade of Pale, but they go deeper than that; quite moody and atmospheric
Bonzo Dog (Doo Dah) Band - novelty with satire

Some Downundrian bands you might be interested in, if you can find them outside Australia:

Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band - a wacky mix of novelty, old-style jazz and pop with satire; they out-Bonzo Bonzo!
Blackfeather - '70s prog-blues-rock with a very live-music sound
Spectrum - also known as Murtceps or Indellible Murtceps, a jazz-tinged '70s prog-rock band, although their best known song has a more country-rock sound
