when did hair bands start and how would you describe what a hair band is?

when did hair bands start and how would you describe what a hair band is?

i think its any band that used a lil bit of makeup, maybe had tons of hair and wore spandex maybe plus had an acrobatic or charismatic singer, also the use of pyrotechnics or flashy stage show plus tons of groupies on the scene.

origins of hair band i think lies within KISS and van halen and its roots begin in the late 70's when kiss had tons of makeup, had a theatrical stage show and then van halen comes along with eddie doing great guitar solos that were flashy and david lee roth with his acrobatic stage moves and sing along choruses.

it really exploded around 1983 with motley crue, twisted sister, def leppard, etc. and by the middle of the decade with bon jovi, poison and cinderella things really started to roll.by the end of the decade even ozzy osbourne, judas priest, alice cooper, kiss, aerosmith and other 70's bands looked and made the music they made at this time the same formula hair bands used.

the scene died out around 1991 or 1992 with an overexposure of bands plus third tier groups that weren't strong as the predecessors like trixter, danger danger, tuff, etc. not to mention the arrival of grunge with newer, heavier groups with a different image like nirvana, soundgarden and pearl jam.

i love most of the hair bands because thats what i grew up on and my first album was def leppard pyromania in march of '83.loved the videos back then like ratt 'round and round' and quiet riot 'c'mon feel the noize' both released in '84.hair metal was most definitely colorful, great live and the music was pretty good too.

To me what is referred to as hair metal nowadays started cropping up in the early 80's with bands like Quiet Riot, Ratt, Dokken, Motley Crue and Twisted Sister.

The media coined the term hair metal. We didn't know what the hell hair metal was back then. It was just good hard rock to us.

To me it's about the sound of the music. Hair bands had that sterile 80s sound with big ole' chorus FX'd vocals and superficial lyrics. But when push comes to shove... really there ain't all that much difference in sound between Motley Crue's Shout At The Devil and Metallica's Kill 'Em All. I guess maybe the ballads is what defined hair bands... All I can say is Pantera kicked ass at it.

80's hair bands were just morphed 70's Glam Rockers from bands like Angel with a little more emphasis on spandex and headbands to make it more gay but some of the music actually rocked and a lot of great shred guitarists came from the Hair band era.

I was walking past the mental hospital the other day, and all the patients were shouting, "13...13....13...13."

The fence was too high to see over, but I saw a little gap in the planks, so I walked over and looked through to see what was going on.

Someone poked me in the eye with a stick.

Then they all started shouting. "14...14...14...14....".

I agree, and I'm not really a hair band lover, but most of these lead guitarists could crank!

I'm a believer of every hair band had at least a good song or two.

I still stand by my view, I dont like the majority of it - but each to their own.

Girls, Girls, Girls by Motley Crue makes me physically ill

I'd say hair bands arrived in the late 70s; you can kind of see the genre in its infancy in bands like The New York Dolls and Twisted Sister.

A "hair band", to me, is a punk band that plays like a rock band, with the image of new wavers/glam bands.

I'm not too hot on the topic. I used to love hair bands, though. I still have most of my old "hair band" music (e.g.; Bon Jovi, Poison, etc.) from way back in the day.

Yep, I totally agree - really good sound - great lead guitarists .................... I much preferred to listen to them than to look at them - all that boofy hair - all that spandex .............
