Seriously, I bet you have to pump a lot of Iron to get those pictures out of your mind.

To me hair metal had less to do with the look and more with the sound. That formulaic, power anthem, power ballad mix. The first hair metal album to my mind was Motley's Theater of Pain. It sounded drastically different from Shout..., but it was a hit so everybody tried to copy it.

"Hair" band started in 1964 when 5 different personalities/ musicians in England didnt comb or ever get a hair cut, like the Beatles did.

the rest is history.

"Hair Band" is a pejorative term some over imaginative journalist, DJ or record executive probably thought up.

I'm not really sure there's a proper definition, or whether it can even be called a musical genre.

I agree - and I agree with roser...

Seems to me that the hair metal-label is mainly used today as a kind of easy labelling of anything remotely metal that you for whatever reason don't like. If that's enough to make it a genre, well... then it's a genre

What I see as 'classic' hair metal is a form of party metal with feel-good lyrics and a couple of good power ballads. And nothing wrong with that in my book. Motley Crue/Theather of Pain definately has a lot to do with it - Girls, Girls, Girls also used to fry my proverbial buns but I've come to a new, higher level of zen in recent years so it's cool with me now

Re: when did hair bands start and how would you describe what a hair band is?

Foot tall hair thanks to Aqua Net. And makeup, and spandex. And, the proverbial power ballad. While Whitesnake didn't start off as a hair band, they eventually followed Bon Jovi's lead as did others and became, as he has said, "Over decorated Christmas trees". Bon Jovi started that formula if you ask me, and the others saw their success and followed suit. That's arguable though. Some would say that Motley Crue were first, or even Quiet Riot. Hair bands didn't take themselves so seriously, it was just for fun and partyin' type music. Your typical rock band has long hair, don't confuse regular rock acts for hair bands though. If they ain't got Aqua Net, they weren't a hair band.

now that i think about it i'd put motley crue as the ones who started the hair band era.it started exploding around 1983 or 1984 with motley crue, def leppard, quiet riot, twisted sister, queensryche, bon jovi, dokken, ratt, whitesnake, etc.

i think its any band that used a lil bit of makeup, maybe had tons of hair and wore spandex maybe plus had an acrobatic or charismatic singer, also the use of pyrotechnics or flashy stage show plus tons of groupies on the scene.

origins of hair band i think lies within KISS and van halen and its roots begin in the late 70's when kiss had tons of makeup, had a theatrical stage show and then van halen comes along with eddie doing great guitar solos that were flashy and david lee roth with his acrobatic stage moves and sing along choruses.
I agree! Not only was Van Halen a hair band, they were instrumental in the development of the concept. Latter day attempts to deny Van Halen's crucial role in the growth of hair metal are naught but historical revisionism by Van Halen's legion of Guitar Hero video game playing fan boys. 'Nuff said.

The one key descriptive element missing from your definition was that the "band had to be active in the eighties", which was the decade when bands such as Van Halen and Bon Jovi refined the concept.

So what was David Lee Roth's hairspray/gel of choice?

van halen, bon jovi and def leppard were probably the biggest sellers of that era.

i think david lee roth also influenced vince neil of motley crue and bret michaels of poison because both copied a lot of his stuff back then.

There is no such thing as hairbands. There are bands with long hair.
Long hair isn't enough. These are the essential elements of a hairband (and here I've borrowed from other luminaries such as Topjimmy, Flower and Mikeh among others):

1. Long teased or heavily poofed up with hairspray/gel hair.

2. Costumes involving spandex and makeup.

3. An acrobatic lead singer (one who jumps around stage like a monkey).

4. Really blossomed in the eighties.

5. Were known for at least one power ballad.

I say to satisfy those that are offended by this hair band stuff....
I'm not one of them. You're making a mistake if you think that I'm using "hair band" in a pejorative way. I really like quite a few power ballads, including:

Great tunes all and there are many more.

Re: when did hair bands start and how would you describe what a hair band is?

In my humble opinion, Mick Jagger didn't blossom in the 80s and is not known for any power ballads. Something like Ruby Tuesday isn't a power ballad, it's just a ballad. He also... didn't have long hair, to my recollection. Maybe at one point he had some long hair but probably not in the 80s. And his hair isn't particularly poofed up or gelled. I think Foxhound has it pretty straight on.

I've nothing to say on this subject because I feel that being on this board for over 5 years..by now most KNOW my opinion on Hairbands...

I must say that there IS room for all tastes in music..I don't have to agree with it persnality to respect that are many great musicians in 'Hairband' era music. And there are some really crappy ones too..that can be said of ALL styles of music .

I just love this quote Metal...it's SOO politically incorrect..I can't stop laughing I miss John Lennon !

People need to be less uptight about music. It is one of our only freedoms of expression.

Metalpriest:

Deja Vu already said it. The Rolling Stones weren't an eighties band. And I'm not sure they recorded anything that could be classified as a power ballad - although "Mixed Emotions" may come close.

I've always admired John Lennon's ability to cut to the chase when asked a question. He couldn't dance worth a damn though....
