Buffalo Springfield vs The Yardbirds

A comment by Deja Vu in another thread gave me the idea for this. So who is better between these two?

Re: Buffalo Springfield vs The Yardbirds

Cripes... that really is comparing apples to oranges... if you said, Buffalo versus Gram Parson era Byrds that would have been one thing... but this is weird... when it comes down to it, though, easily the Yardbirds... man for man, better musicians... and far more influential... as Simon Napier Bell once said, "There are four bands in rock history that count. The Yardbirds was one of them."

Re: Buffalo Springfield vs The Yardbirds

Now this is an interesting pairing. I have a clear winner in my mind though. Buffalo Springfield are a little more folk-ish, and The Yardbirds are a little more blues-rock, so the nod goes to them. And that's not considering the fact that they had three excellent and legendary guitarists where Buffalo Springfield only had two.

Re: Buffalo Springfield vs The Yardbirds

I doubt the Yardbirds ever got the recognition they deserve. But then again, did the Buffalo?

I think the Neil factor wins it for me but I think Yardbirds were more influential, really.

I always loved the Yardbirds sound. They win hands down for me.

Yardbirds - Two great bands here, but the tough "in your face" compositions created by this superb English band appeal to me infinitely moreso.

Thumbs up Re: Buffalo Springfield vs The Yardbirds

The Yardbirds BECAUSE of Clapton, Beck & Page being in the band.

Re: Buffalo Springfield vs The Yardbirds

It seems odd to compare these two. It will depend on the style you like more. I love guitar based blues music. And my favorite guitar player that ever plugged in is Eric Clapton.
I went Yardbirds.

I think the best way to frame the response is: the Yardbirds made heavy metal and psychedelia inevitable... I don't think Buffalo Springfield made anything inevitable... except for CSNY, which I don't think is a good thing... LOL! I love the Springfield... and the Byrds... and the Hollies... but you get those guys together in the same band and I find it irritating... but anyway, the Yardbirds were responsible for so much that came to be after their passing while the Springfield didn't make anything inevitable... Gram Parsons and his crowd made country rock inevitable (once again, something I don't particularly like) not the Springfield...

I agree with most of what you said. The Yardbirds were way ahead of their time. Buffalo Springfield was a great band but the Yardbirds were more influential and helped usher in psychedelia and heavier music. Plus the fact that Buffalo Springfield only had one truly stellar album imo. Thats not to say the others were bad just not at the level of Buffalo Springfield Again.

The Yardbirds were clearly for me the better band here. I have always liked them.
