LED ZEPPELIN’s Jimmy Page Testifies At “Stairway To Heaven” Copyright Trial

According to the Associated Press, guitar legend Jimmy Page testified Wednesday that until a few years ago, he'd never heard a song that Led Zeppelin is accused of ripping off for “Stairway To Heaven”.

"Something like that would stick in my mind. It was totally alien to me," Page said of the instrumental song “Taurus”, by the band Spirit.

Led Zeppelin's Page dodges court questions, riffs air guitar

LOS ANGELES -- Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page demonstrated a deft touch at deflecting questions aimed at showing he might have lifted a passage for the introduction to the 1971 hit "Stairway to Heaven."

Testifying in his defence Thursday in a copyright infringement case, Page showed little interest in comparing his composition with the obscure earlier instrumental work in question, "Taurus," by the late Randy Wolfe, founder of the band Spirit.

Page was reluctant to compare the harmony, tempo or structure of the two songs, thwarting the lawyer representing Wolfe's estate in the lawsuit against Led Zeppelin, Page and singer Robert Plant, as well as several music companies.

"You want to step through it," attorney Francis Malofiy asked as he tried to get Page to discuss the "Taurus" sheet music, which is the work protected by copyright.

"Not necessarily," Page replied, sending a ripple of comic relief through the gallery during an otherwise dull day of testimony in the case.

Led Zeppelin Ask Judge To End Stairway To Heaven Trial

Lawyers for Led Zeppelin members Robert Plant and Jimmy Page filed a motion in Los Angeles federal court on Monday asking the judge in the "Stairway To Heaven" copyright infringement case to decide the outcome now, over a jury, before it resumes today.

Of course he can, he was a reknowned session player before Zeppelin.

Anyhoo trial's over, looks like Zeppelin won. I don't have any feelings either way, tbh. The person who really should have sued was Jake Holmes, that's real plagiarism. Stairway was more like pronounced influence.

Re: Did Led Zeppelin Cop “Stairway to Heaven” from Another Band?

OK...the song in question was a short two minute instrumental called "Taurus". Only a small section in the middle bares a vague resemblance to the opening to Stairway To Heaven.

Face it. It was a total coincidence and the children of the Spirit band members were only out for money. I know you guys hate Led Zeppelin and you wanted them to lose this trial badly...but they didn't so...oh well....

Re: Did Led Zeppelin Cop “Stairway to Heaven” from Another Band?

I mean, Zepp did play a song from the same album as Taurus and they have an unambiguous history of taking very liberal influence from other people's songs. I don't think it's at all unlikely that Taurus influenced Stairway, I just don't think it's enough influence to warrant plagiarism in this case. And the courts have concurred with that.

It was a blatant ripoff. Judge got it wrong.

The jury didn't even get to hear the original Spirit song in question.

Huh?! I only know f two people on this board who "hate" Led Zeppelin and only one has posted in this thread.

As far as the verdict goes, it's just an intellectual curiosity to me. I mean it's only about the money, and has nothing to do with my listening enjoyment - or lack thereof. I'm no more or less likely to play either track as a result of the trial.

Re: Did Led Zeppelin Cop “Stairway to Heaven” from Another Band?

I've never been a Led Zeppelin fan but I think the judge did the correct thing. This piece of music is from the fifteenth century. (About :35 seconds in) Did Spirit hear this too, and just who is suing? Isn't it a trust? If it is then, is it because of who wrote it first or money? To bad this guy does not have a trust, so he can sue Spirit.

Lawyer Who Sued Led Zeppelin Suspended From Practicing Law

The attorney who flouted courtroom protocol during the "Stairway To Heaven" copyright trial has been suspended from practicing law, reports Ashley Cullins of The Hollywood Reporter.

Francis Malofiy's behavior as an attorney has been the subject of repeated judicial scrutiny, and a Thursday (June 30th) ruling means he won't be doing any lawyering until the fall.

Well that's interesting.

No doubt some conspiracies will arise from this.
