It was getting good reviews, but you can't always count on that. I figured they were worth a shot and wasn't disappointed.

Re: What music did you LAST buy?

The Beatles in Magical Mystery Tour CD in the 1987 version: tracks 1-5 are from the soundtrack, while 6-11 are singles As and Bs from that year (all in stereo). I have wanted this album since the vinyl LP was released in the UK in the late seventies.

The album cover still makes me laugh

Re: What music did you LAST buy?

The last thing (music-wise) I bought was a double CD compilation called Number 1 Hits From the 60s. I got this months ago, and have played only one of the two discs. Yes, it's that bad.

First, this thing has a psychedelic paint job on the cover, complete with peace symbol in the centre of the "0" in "60s", but there are only two tracks that could be called psychedelic, and no anti-war/protest songs.

Secondly, these aren't all rock or pop songs. Some are a bit of a strange choice to put on this thing, such as The Unicorn - Irish Rovers and A Scottish Soldier - Andy Stewart, which don't fit well with songs like Wild Thing - Troggs and Shakin' All Over - Normie Rowe. It's not that I have anything against these songs, but they just don't belong together.

Thirdly, the idiots who put this piece of crap together have no @#^#$% idea what they're doing! They've got poor quality remasters that sound like crap! One track in particular has been "fixed" by trying to remove a modulation effect. Result: a totally #$%#-up track. And the kicker: the modulation effect is MEANT to be there! Schmucks!

Fourthly: Honey - Bobby Goldsboro on disc 2! 'Nuff said.

I'm wondering whether or not to play the second disc. Yeesh!

I tend to buy local bands from my area to support them, but the last thing I bought otherwise was the Greta Van Fleet -Black Smoke Rising EP on Vinyl.

Saw Jack White in Vancouver Sunday night! What did you think of Emperor of Sand? I'm a big Mastodon fan but I didn't think much stood out.

Hard for me to make any comparisons with past Mastodon albums... since Emperor Of Sand is actually the first Mastodon CD I ever purchased! And actually, I really liked it a great deal. Personally, my two favorite track on it was Clandestiny. (Killer riff, as well as the very retro Moog synth in the middle - assuming it is a Moog!) I also really liked Steambreather and Ancient Kingdom.

Like I said, it's my first Mastodon disc, so I have no basis for comparison in terms of how it stacks up compared with earlier albums. But I really like what I'm hearing so far. I really dig prog-inflected metal, and I also like Voivod and solo Ihsahn a great deal. (In fact, Andromeda's got a very dissonant riff that borders on Voivod-ian, circa Killing Technology in '87). I don't know, perhaps my prior unfamiliarity with Mastodon's work gives me a fresh perspective. My slate was blank, so to speak, and I could just enjoy Emperor Of Sand as just being its own thing. Anyway, I've always been aware of Mastodon, reading about them in magazines and so forth, so I've always had a bit of a curiosity about them. Better late than never, right? (But then again, I've always been a latecomer to bands since the mid-'90s...)

BTW #1... I also happen to be partial to Brendan O'Brien production jobs (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against The Machine, AC/DC, King's X), and I liked his work with Mastodon here. Very clean, crisp and trebly with just the right amount of bottom end, IMHO.

BTW #2... And speaking of prog-inflected metal, E happens to be the first Enslaved disc I ever purchased!
