Is rap a type of rock?

Rolling Stone and The Rock-n-Roll Hall of fame act like it is.

What do you think?

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

It could be when you think of the origins of rock. Rap or hip-hop, as well as rock, are both derived from boogie-woogie, jazz and rhythm and blues stylistics, all spawning from African roots. Rock can thence be rap also if words are spoken instead of sung, which has been exemplified by the likes of Run DMC, Public Enemy, Rage Against the Machine, Kid Rock and the Beastie Boys. Even rock has added a bit of electro and funk sounds to its style, so it all varies. It's all simply popular music you know, that's why they fuse together well.

Those who vote 'no' here for the simple disliking of rap is really besides the point....

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

To me, rap is no more "rock" than jazz or pop.
Yes, there are fusions of these styles and rock such as jazz-rock, pop-rock, and rap-rock.
But these genres in their purest forms are totally separate from rock.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

And what exactly is 'pure' rock anymore anyway? Rock has underwent so many mutations over the years that's it's so versatile. Hip-hop is derived from funk and reggae which has been derived from aspects of rock, once again dating back to original jazz/r & b styles and African roots. They are all essentially from the same seed, which by the way, rock is pop music, it's all popular music.

The traditional modern sound of rock with heavy use of electric guitar and drums is what seems to be the stand out, but they are really just replacements or embellishments of the same original instruments used at the dawn of blues with a different twang. The finishing result or sound of each genre makes for an obvious distinguishment, like ethnicity, but underneath each distorted coating is the strum of the same tune.

A more truer statement might be that rock is not classical or baroque music, but you never know what similarities lie beneath.

The more I think about it... The more it doesn't really matter because I don't like it regardless of what you call it.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

How many rap acts are in the HOF so far? It could be argued they're in there for influencing rock acts, as there's been quite a bit of rap influence on rock what with Rage Against The Machine, Slipknot, etc. As for Rolling Stone, they're not strictly a rock magazine, so...

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

Even though most of the accompanying music riffs are stolen from rock songs I could not say it is rock. It's a drum beat with a dude talking in rhythm..no guitars at all. Don't you think that Rock requires guitars or some keyboard action. No it isn't rock but it could be considered a type of music because it possesses lyrics and rhythm....to me most rap is crap.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

If we define rap as R&B beats then "no". If we define rap as a lyrical delivery then it can become a rock song.

Rap means to converse. Rap music was based on speaking poetically to music. If you add a rock sound to rap vocals then its a rock song. I dont think there is a rule that states "Rock has to be sang to be rock". A lot of bands have created rock music with rap vocals. Just look at the 90's.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

What about this R & B thing? I go to the music store and they have the rap and hip/hop artists under that category. I thought rhythm and blues included soul stars and people like B. B. King...real music.
