It includes both but the hard truth is this. R&B today consits of hip hop and rap. Not a lot else. Its what R&B has evolved into.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

I'd say rap is no more rock than a human is a fish. If you look at the everlasting growth of rock's or pop's tree of life, rap is merely another branch or even leaf spawning from a seed of African origins. It's a gradual change of taxonomy in music, one class, family and 'species' after another. it's musical DNA with multiple distinctive descents. This is the specialty of rock, it's meant to be flexible and embraced as the rebellious, aggressive, distinctive and challenging sound that we've loved since birth. Instantly canceling any further possibilities from inarguable objectives, especially from personal preference alone, is really what digging a deeper grave for rock.

For further insight:

P.S, I'm not sure why this question was asked if the OP seemingly knew the outcome of the question from a voting criteria commonly based on personal preferences. And to question why rap has yet to be a section in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is as enigmatic as Madonna's induction and the absence of other important acts such as Lou Reed and Yes which is why I have long lost interest and respect for.

Is rap a type of rock?

No, it's a type of angry poetry from guys who are apparently tone-deaf...

i agree with everything youve been saying. Rock and rap share those aggressive and challenging and rebellious characteristics. Rap is just another form music has taken that shares those characteristics and like you said rocks history is as afro american and blues based as rap is.
Theres some great rap out there if you look beyond the bling, hos, cops rap that the music video channels some to love. But on a site like this its obvious that people would harbor biases against rap so that result of this poll was obvious from the beginning.

I concur, I almost mentioned that I'd place rock and pop as much closer together than jazz or rap are to any of the others. But I figured people have had enough of my comparisons between rock and pop lately.

I'd say pop and rock are even more closely related than rock and blues, or rock and metal. That's not to say there aren't rock bands (say, Peter Green or Ozzy) that are much closer to blues or metal. But if you counted up every rock band in existence you'll find a lot more pop music than you'll find blues or metal.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

Rock and Hip-Hop are both types of modern popular music which share common foundations, and have been an influence on one another since hip-hop's accession. So no, rap isn't a kind of rock but rap and rock are both types of popular music.

...and those riffs were stolen from blues songs. So maybe a better question is "Is Rock a type of Blues." I see rap as a sort of hybrid between funk and electronic music. The originators were looking for new ways to create funky grooves using segments of found (or stolen, whichever you prefer) music. Taking riffs or chord changes or melodies from one song and recrafting them into something marginally "new" has a long history in rock, country, folk and blues.

Very early rap in the very late 70s and early 80s was a hybrid of Jamaican toast music and disco. If you listen to a lot of early rap it has more of a disco sound to it. There was also a funk element to some of it but the disco vibe was more prominent at the time.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

Serena's posts in this thread is where it's at.

But no rap isn't a type of rock, but they both come from the same foundations and are pretty much two sides of the same coin, just different ways to express the same emotions. (and please, there's plenty of rap lyrics that aren't gangsta rap, and there's lots of misogynist/authority-hating/crime-praising rock lyrics).

there's tons of guitars in rap music. not in every song, but in many...eminem had joe perry do a guitar solo on one for example.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

some is some isn't. Rap is too big a genre to maek this a black and white issue. Several times the two have crossed paths.

https://www.plasticlittleraps.com/his...rap-music.html

"Rap evolved from the singing poets from Africa and the Caribbean who laid the foundation for modern-day American rap music."

Rock is not mentioned in this article. From comments I have read elsewhere, rap is rap and not meant to be rock or any other genre.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

Rap isn't even music...it's rhyming words put to sound effects...If there is a rapper who actually plays and uses an instrument on stage and in their recordings then yeah you could call it "music" but it would most likely be very BAD music...but NO it's NOT "ROCK"

Finially soneone gets close to the heart of the matter - sorta.

How are you people defining rap? Rap is a lyrical structure. I am not sure it has ever been confined to one sound of music? I have a feeling a lot of people define rap by the music they first heard it used in (usually gangsta rap). There is no single musical structure for rap that I am aware of. People are just using different types of rap music to define what all of rap music is. Its not a musical structure - its a lyrical structure and vocal styling.

Edit - I agree with highteas post also

If we define origins then IMO Zep is closest of all. Rap is a souped up version of Reggae and Skaa music (which I have no clue how to spell).
