Re: Is rap a type of rock?

No, but they have common ancestors and draw on similar musical genres.

At its most general, I would say rap is inclusive of various genres I thoroughly enjoy, like Jazz influenced hip hop (Native Tongues Posse, etc) and underground/alternative hip hop see (MF DOOM, Madlib etc.). And I constantly am hearing things I hear in rock songs. The main difference is vocal delivery and looped percussion in rap, IMO.

I mean, any rap youre going to be exposed to, unless you know what to look fo,r is gonna be hollow, shitty, meaningless music. Stuff that I wouldnt compare to RnR at all really, but the stuff I dig,.. shonuff.

I would think it would have to first qualify as music before being called a type of rock...

Just because other artists have melded rock songs with elements of rap doesn't make it rock any more than I would call spoken word poetry rock.

Rap is street poetry with a beat...

Rock is music in which instruments, such as guitars and drums, are played and a singer "sings" the songs...

Just because it's recorded doesn't make it music...

At least that's my understanding...

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

I think that some bands are trying to merge the two. I heard this rapper the other day and he had a real rock band with him and was singing rock and rapping in some other places. It kicked ass. I coud not believe I enjoyed it but it really was good. I wish I could remember the name of the band. I just saw them on The Cool Channel..

Doesn't the Cool Channel mostly play 80s stuff? Maybe it was Run DMC or something. I know Lil Wayne put out a rock album a couple years ago.

Is rap a type of rock?

No, rap is a type of music and so is rock. Rap is rap, rock is rock, opera is opera, country is country, etc. I think profit making entity's use rock in a general sense meaning commercial music which rap certainly falls into that category.

Re: Is rap a type of rock?

No, different musical genre with shared influences and some artists that blur the line between.
