Re: Country rock or New country

What's new country? I love new country rock like Jason Isbell, Deer Tick, Shooter Jennings and DBT but if you mean that pop stars with cowboy hats sh*t they play on country radio then I'll pass.

Re: Country rock or New country

New Country is pretty girls and guys wearing cowboy hats singing adult contemporary songs with a southern accent.

I voted Country Rock btw. In my case I mean bands like Poco and the Flying Burrito Brothers.

Country Rock. Nobody east of the Missouri River should ever wear a cowboy hat for any reason.

Re: Country rock or New country

I think they're the same thing. New country is basically just rock music with the occasional tractor-based lyric. For my money it stays truer to the ethos of rock n roll than most of the modern rock music that comes out. Modern country has somehow managed to stay very modestly produced and organically instrum'ed in the digital age, which is not something you can say for rock.

I'm just the opposite - the further away from big hair, rhinestones, fiddles, steel guitars, and that infernal twang, the better. I'm pretty indiifferent concerning modern country - I never make any effort to listen to it but it doesn't bother me too much ( unlike rap, techno, thrash metal, or punk - which are generally repulsive).

Not sure what artists you are talking about but radio friendly pop country features just as much audio airbrushing as any Keisha record.

Mm... before I forget, I misspoke, I should have mentioned it stays truer to certain strains of rock. Tangled Up In Blue, Tom Petty, The Doors even 90% of the time, I've always been more that kind of guy, and you'll find a lot more of that in Taylor Swift than you will in Arcade Fire. Of course when it comes to the Desolation Row, Velvet Underground, Stooges sect, modern rock carries much more of that ethos.

As far as airbrushing goes, I completely concur with you, but that's not the issue of modest production. I mean, a CSN record doesn't contain any blemishes either. The difference between a computerized record like Ke$ha, which sounds like it could have been produced by the internet (lol), and modern country is that the latter is full of lush organic instrumentations and very open-air, bright, natural sounding performances. It's modestly produced, without a whole lot of vocal doubling and reverb and a minimum of synthesizers. It doesn't have a tinny claustrophobic sound like 80s pop or a space-age digital sound like modern music.

Granted, I don't even listen to very much modern country. But the stuff I DO listen to has really blown me away in terms of production. I wouldn't have ever expected this stuff to come out in the 00s/10s.

I'm used to the 00s being defined by albums like Audioslave's debut, which regardless of sounding absolutely gorgeous, truly drips with an "in studio" kind of feel. You can almost feel everybody sitting in a soundproof booth laying down their piece of the song alone when the rest of the band has already finished. They might have recorded it live for all I know, but studio technology is so high-tech today that you tend to get that kind of shiny feel. I'm sure modern country probably is recorded in sound booths but somehow these guys make it sound bright and pure, practically live. Taylor Swift's records could almost pass for BBC sessions where they record live and then add a few overdubs, as far as how they sound.

Re: Country rock or New country

I don't listen to a lot of country but someday I feel like I'll HAVE to. 'Cause so many of my favorite albums of all-time are very much verging on country, I'd definitely consider them country rock.... Mudcrutch, Exile on Main Street, American Stars N Bars, Carnival of Excess.... Someday I'm gonna have to find a way to break into actual country music. Other than the obvious ones like Hank and Cash.

Re: Country rock or New country

I am a huge fan of country rock, or as the godfather of the genre (Gram Parsons) preferred to call it "Cosmic American Music". Flying Burrito Brothers, The Byrds, Dylan, Emmylou Harris, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Poco are all huge favourites of mine.

I am also a fan of many "newer" country artists, particularly those in the alt country genre: DBT, Magnolia Elec Co, Ryan Adams, The Jayhawks, Ryan Bingham, The Old 97's, Hank III, The Weight, to name a few...

I absolutely hate "pop country" (e.g. Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Toby Keith, etc). Its manufactured crap...

Hank III sums it up well (although very politically incorrectly ):

"Dick in Dixie"
Well some say I'm not country
and that's just fine with me
'Cause I don't wanna be country
with some ass*** looking over at me
They say that I'm ill-mannered
that I'm gonna self-destruct
But if you know what I'm thinkin'
you'll know that pop country really sucks

So I'm here to put the "dick" in Dixie
and the "c**t" back in country
'Cause the kind of country I hear now days
is a bunch of fuckin' shit to me
They say that I'm ill-mannered
that I'm gonna self-destruct
But if you know what I'm thinkin'
you'll know that pop country really sucks

Well we're losing all the outlaws
that had to stand their ground
and they're being replaced by these kids
from a manufactured town
And they don't have no idea
about sorrow and woe
'Cause they're all just too damn busy
kissin' ass on Music Row

So I'm here to put the "dick" in Dixie
and the "c**t" back in country
'Cause the kind of country I hear nowdays
is a bunch of fuckin' shit to me
And they say that I'm ill-mannered
that I'm gonna self-destruct
But if you know what I'm thinkin'
you'll know that pop country really sucks

And if you know what I'm thinkin'
you'll know that pop country really sucks
