Re: Are We Making Classic Music Anymore?

really do we have to see this BS again?
plenty of great artists out there now. I saw this same article 10 years ago, 5 years ago and so on.

If you are stuck in the 70's, 80's or 90's music then you are someone who is not open to many different kinds of music and only like what you grew up on. If so stop complaining and open your mind or just go away. Yes pop music might suck but there are more bands today than ever before open your eyes and listen

Re: Are We Making Classic Music Anymore?

It's just simple foolishness to look at history repeating itself since the dawn of popular music, and then arbitrarily deciding that because this generation happens to be your own, suddenly everything is going to change. It's ego, really. No your generation is not special. It's so odd to see people deluding themselves so willfully when they obviously should know better. Nothing's changed.

Bands from the 60s to the 90s aren't exclusive in capturing new generations of fans. Wait, you mean... people still listen to Frank Sinatra? Miles Davis? B... Beethoven??? Such shocking news! Wait... you mean to tell me... 40+ year olds don't tend to have the highest opinion of newer popular music? You've just blown my mind. I never would have guessed.

Well of course not. I doubt any of us here are the norm, hah!

Re: Are We Making Classic Music Anymore?

I don't know, I am always confused about this subject.

While there are plenty of good bands that are worth of our time and ears coming up everyday, I really think that the times have changed. This large number of good stuff doesn't have a big name, an absolute leader, like, say, Nirvana or Ramones.

I am adamantly convinced that the time will play his part in separating the really good stuff from just the good stuff or average stuff like it did in the 00s, but then again, Strokes, White Stripes, QOTSA and co. aren't nowhere near Nirvana, Pearl Jam and co.

In all reality, I don't know what to think.

Well said hightea. Plenty of great bands in the last 15 years. I think as much as there was before. But for whatever assinine reason radio, video channels, and rock magazines arent giving much exposure to the great bands of the past while. And they were giving them exposure in the 70's and 90's, thats really the only difference - some of these bands would be absolute huge right now if they got exposure. And, no i dont mean Foo Fighters, Queens of the stone age, etc, these bands are getting exposure and they are very average in my opinion. Im sure many of us on this board could write a long list of many of the recent greats. But i think the people here stuck in the 60's or 70's dont want to hear it. Their loss, but i think they lose the right to say there's no classic music anymore when they are not willing to explore and try these bands.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Porcupine Tree (a group I consider to be the Led Zeppelin of the 00s) is completely shunned by rock critics. And then again, so was Led Zeppelin back in the day .

Re: Are We Making Classic Music Anymore?

Part of me think that some people are really close minded and tied to classic rock, but the other part of me believe that some people are a little enthusiastic about the new bands.

I haven't even come close of hearing as much 00s stuff as I heard from the 90s. So far this is what I think: Although I really, really enjoy stuff like Interpol, Arctic Monkeys, QOTSA, White Stripes, Black Keys and The Flaming Lips, they are evenly matched (if not surpassed) by the newer albums from old artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead, David Bowie, U2, VH, Alice In Chains, Neil Younf and so forth, which are definetly not in their prime.

Again, I believe I still need to hear a lot of new bands to form an accurate opinion, but I find very hard sometimes keeping track with three million new bands and some old bands that I have not listened yet.

Zzzz..I now enjoy discussing this issue about as much as I do talking about politics and religion (i.e., not at all).

I do agree with the author's premise that we are all heavily biased towards the music that was "the soundtrack of our youth"

There is good rock in the classic rock style still being made but you won't find it on the radio or MTV,you have to dig deeper.

Like many have said there are good rock bands today but nobody wants to invest in promoting rock bands. Today promotion money is only thrown at what is the most broadly appealing acts. This usually involves a lot of dancing and jiggling breasts and flippy hair. Oh and some music.

Re: Are We Making Classic Music Anymore?

70's - no you don't have to dig deep

Music lover - time has already proven it to me.

Butch - not true. The pop acts don't play the major festivals of the world.

All of you complaining go to rateyourmusic.com , spotify or any music site. Type in a band you like and start listening to like modern bands . It's easier today to find music then in the 70's.
