Re: Mickey Thomas At Work On New Starship Album

I wish it was a new album from jefferson Starship, with the classic line-up, Chaquico, Kantner, Freiberg, Thomas, Slick and Sears. I love that Freedom At Point Zero era music..

I've always preferred Marty Balin's vocals over Mickey Thomas'. Red Octopus and Spitfire are my favorite Starship albums. But I'll be interested to hear this.

Balin is good, but for me, Thomas is just a great rock singer, and a helluva frontman, where Marty is a complete bore. I just have always loved the Freedom At Point Zero and Modern Times records- not psychedelic, just straight rock with killer guitar riffs and big hooks. It's a sore subject for me that I missed both those tours. Grace Slick was melting down almost nightly yet that inspired the rest of the band to greatness- find a bootleg from either of those tours and you'll hear it come across..

Once they became "Starship" the magic ended.

I thought Marty and Grace had great chemistry onstage. Never cared for Mickey Thomas' vocals. He always sounded more like a woman than Grace. Just my opinion.

I saw the Modern Times Tour in 1981. Wasn't at all impressed. They had a ton of technical issues i remember.
The Jefferson Airplane reunion concert in 1989 was ions better.

That was sort of my first thought too: "I'm sure his housekeeper will enjoy it."

It'd be a step up for those who think Selena Gomez is talented.

After Paul Kantner left and Jefferson Starship became, Starship, I quit listening with both ears. I'm not interested in Mickey Thomas' new album.

The new album needs Craig Chaquico at least.

Re: Mickey Thomas At Work On New Starship Album

I find it pretty amazing that people rag on Mickey Thomas because of Starship. Specifically, because of 'We Built This City". I think it was a great pop song, and it got Thomas the massive hit he probably had earned after many years slugging it out in shithole bars with Elvin Bishop- yes, many forget it's his voice on "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" and that IS a great pop song. I wonder how many who are ragging on him have actually sat down and listened to any of the very, very good Jefferson Starship records, like Modern Times or Freedom At Point Zero, both with Kantner still in the band. They rock hard. No, they probably haven't listened to them, they prefer to make a generic call based on something that they listened to when it came out and did the "white mans jawthrust" to while dancing to it, but now cover their "shame" by denouncing the singer. All of this while they listen to Bon Jovi.

It's f*cking tragic.
