Was Billy Squier's Career Really Destroyed by the 'Rock ... - Ultimate Classic ...
Ultimate Classic Rock
Billy Squier spent the early '80s on a hot streak, releasing two multi-platinum Top 5 albums (1981?s Don't Say No and 1982?s Emotions in Motion) in a two-year span. For a brief while, it looked like he'd end up being one of the biggest rock acts of ...

Personally never cared for his stuff.

I think the switch in popularity to alternative and college rock is what sent this arena rock king down the tube. More than any video he released.

Re: Was Billy Squier's Career Really Destroyed by the 'Rock ... - Ultimate Classic ..

When I first heard Billy Squier, live at Reading 1981 or around that time, I thought he was quite original. When I listen now, I can hear a fair bit of Zeppelin. Even so, I think In the Dark, My Kinda Lover, Lonely is the Night, all from the Don't Say No album are all good songs. On the first album, he was produced by the brilliant Eddie Offord and the experienced Mark Clarke was his bassist for a while. Squier did not have much success in the UK anyway, so his decline was difficult to understand. It wasn't until the internet that I noticed the blame attached to the video, so I don't know if it was really due to the video or a form of 'Chinese whispers'. It seems to me that people with less talent than Billy Squier have sustained more enduring careers.

I saw him around that time in concert. He blew chunks. That video was the least of his problem.

Dancing around like an oompa loompa in a open pink shirt didn't help, but sometimes, the songwriting doesn't pan out.

His style changed after "Don't Say No",he became more pop than straight ahead rock and roll. And by the late 80s when he returned to his roots,it was too late.

But yeah,that video didn't help.
