History seems to be littered with people who made a lasting input to bands before they became famous, but moved on and received little acknowledgement or financial remuneration. Al Atkins springs to mind. Other examples include Bob Welch (kept the band alive to be rewarded by being turfed out), Anthony Phillips (encouraged his bandmates to play) and Syd Barrett (built the foundations of enormous future success).
