Re: Beatles Protege Cilla Black Dies - Ultimate Classic Rock

I was not a fan of Cilla Black's records (her voice was too harsh for me), but I remember watching her BBC TV show in the sixties. She was the first woman to have her own series in the UK and was also one of the first British artists to turn to American popular songs. It was always a mystery to me how George Martin could not commit to all of the orchestrations on the groundbreaking Sgt Pepper, because he was also working with Cilla Black.

Although she was virtually retired, Cilla's death was sudden and shocking. She never appeared to be ill and was 'only' 72. I understand she was sitting on the balcony of her villa in Spain, stood up, passed out and hit her head, resulting in a stroke which killed her. It is very sad, as she was charismatic and never involved in misbehaviour or scandal. For some reason, I did like her early seventies hit, Something Tells Me, which was among her last records as she gave up working to concentrate on her family. The demo of her theme song, Step Inside Love, written by Paul McCartney, from 1967, with the Beatle on piano and produced by George Martin is excellent.

RIP Cilla Black
