The Lovin' Spoonful had 7 consecutive Top 10 hits in '65 & '66 also. 10 Top 40 hits all-together.

Kool & the Gang had 19 Top 40s. (1973-1985)

Journey had 16 Top 40s.

The Animals had 14 Top 40s.

Paul Revere & the Raiders (Raiders) had 15 Top 40s.

The Hollies had 12 Top 40s.
Great choices, although truth be told I've never liked Journey or ELO. Love the rest of those bands though, and I understand you're putting forth objective criteria.
Never cared for Journey much either. I was surprised they had so many hits. I can't even name one of 'em. I can hum one but that's about it. ( they're tearing me apart in every every wa-ay)I do like Elo though.

Besides the Beatles and Stones, first two I think of when I think of a "great singles band" are CCR and the Guess Who. Another that comes to my mind is Steppenwolf. Now, they didn't really have quite as many hits as some, but they had a small string of these great sounding rock singles...I mean look at their Greatest Hits collections, even the songs that weren't really charting hits ("Sookie Sookie" for example) sound like they were. Even some of their album cuts sound like good singles...at least to me they do. Two more similar bands would be the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream.

Re: Story About 10 Greatest Singles Bands

I think more Wolf tunes would have got more exposure if they weren't locked into that black leather biker band label. So many great tunes that should have received more airtime. How about 28, It's Never Too Late, Jupiter's Child, Ride With Me, Renegade, Faster Than The Speed Of Life, Snowblind Friend and Who Needs Ya. Sookie Sookie, Don't Step On The Grass Sam and The Pusher were banned on quite a few radio stations.

"None of Your Doing" off The Second always sounded to me like it would have made a good single. "28" is another...love that one.

I'm thinking that the Buckinghams would perhaps needle into this group.

The Kinks should absolutely positively be in the list!

Then of course there's the Everly Brothers, Supremes, Johnny Rivers, Roy Orbison, Cliff Richard, Gene Pitney, Neil Diamond etc. You can't limit the list to just ten artists. You'd need a top 40 anyway.

Re: Story About 10 Greatest Singles Bands

Buckinghams in one year (1967) had:

Kind Of A Drag #1
Don't You Care #6
Lawdy Miss Claudy #12
Mercy Mercy Mercy #5
Hey Baby (they're playing our song) #10
Susan #8
They have a ton of other great tunes (garage, pop and psychedelic) that i'm surprised never charted. Love this band, Dennis Tufano has a great voice.

ELO and Queen surely should be included.

Paul Revere & the Raiders certainly deserve consideration. Good call on the Hollies. Foxhound's mention of the Turtles and Tommy James are also good ones.

The Beach Boys definitely deserve more than an honorable mention. They're probably in the top five.

Re: Story About 10 Greatest Singles Bands

Whenever I think of the singles, I think of TOM PETTY!

His greatest hits is the essential greatest hits IMO.
