Re: Did Led Zeppelin Cop “Stairway to Heaven” from Another Band?

JEFF BECK Comments On LED ZEPPELIN’s “Stairway To Heaven” Lawsuit – “I Had To Smirk”

Guitarist Jeff Beck “had to smirk” when he heard about the Led Zeppelin “Stairway To Heaven” plagiarism case when a representative of the band Spirit claimed that Zeppelin stole the chord progression from their instrumental track “Taurus”.

"I had to smirk because I knew that Jimmy (Page) and Robert (Plant) would come out on top," Beck tells Billboard. "Apparently you can't copyright a chord sequence. It has to have a lyric or some kind of a meaningful melody to be copyrighted. And it is a chord sequence which has been used loads of times, but not in such an iconic way. It clearly is the same chord sequence (as Spirit's 'Taurus'), but then we're all guilty of stealing a chord sequence and sticking some words on top of it. So I think it's a bit of bravado to try to bring it to court, but Jimmy came out ahead. So, lucky Old Jim!"

Jeff Beck sums things up in a nutshell.

Re: Did Led Zeppelin Cop “Stairway to Heaven” from Another Band?

Just to expand upon my post #9 above from 2014, I'm pretty sure that Page got that chord sequence from Davy Graham's instrumental recording of "Cry Me A River". It was a hit in England in the late 50's, when a teenage Jimmy Page was learning the guitar. It predates "Taurus" by about 10 years, so although Page did steal the chord progression (which isn't actionable), he didn't steal it from Spirit.
