This Day In Rock History: Oct 16th


1986: Keith Richards organized a concert at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis to celebrate Chuck Berry’s 60th birthday which was two days later. Berry would be joined onstage by the likes of Richards, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Cray, Julian Lennon, Linda Ronstadt & Etta James.

1975: Sweet peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Ballroom Blitz” which was their second top ten single in the U.S.

1988: The Traveling Wilburys, a supergroup which included Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison & Tom Petty released their debut album Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. The album went on to peak at number three on the Billboard 200 album chart & sell three million copies in the U.S.

1997: Glen Buxton, guitarist for the original Alice Cooper band died of complications from pneumonia in Mason City, IA. He was 49 years old.

1979 Prince releases his sophomore album, Prince, containing the #1 R&B hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and the original version of "I Feel For You," later a hit for Chaka Khan. It's his first album certified Platinum for sales over 1 million.

1979 Following a vicious legal battle with MCA Records, the third Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album, Damn The Torpedoes, is released on the label's new subsidiary, Backstreet Records.

This Day In Rock History: Oct 20th


1977, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines from Lynyrd Skynyrd were all killed along with manager Dean Kilpatrick when their rented plane ran out of fuel and crashed into a densely wooded thicket in the middle of a swamp in Gillsburg, Mississippi. The crash seriously injured the rest of the band and crew who were due to play at Louisiana University that evening.

1969: John Lennon released his second solo single “Cold Turkey” which went on to reach number thirty on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.

2001: The Concert for New York City took place at Madison Square Garden. Many of the attendees were families and members of the New York Fire & Police Departments. Some of the artists that appeared included Paul McCartney, The Who, David Bowie, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Bon Jovi, James Taylor, Billy Joel and John Mellencamp.

1965, Bill Black, Elvis Presley's bass player, (1954-57), died four months after receiving surgery to remove a brain tumour, aged 39. With guitarist Scotty Moore, and Elvis Presley on rhythm guitar, Black played on ‘That's All Right (Mama)’, Heartbreak Hotel, ‘Baby Let's Play House’, ‘Mystery Train’, ‘Hound Dog’; ‘Jailhouse Rock’ in the late 1950s. Black, Scotty Moore and drummer D. J. Fontana toured extensively during Presley's early career. After leaving Presley Black formed Bill Black's Combo.

1997, Elton John's 'Candle In The Wind 97' was declared by the Guinness Book Of Records as the biggest selling single record of all time, with 31.8 million sales in less than 40 days and raising more than £20 million for charity.

2006, American musician, singer, songwriter, and drummer Sandy West died. Founding member (with Joan Jett) of all girl group The Runaways, hailed by fans and critics alike to be one of the most groundbreaking drummers in rock and roll history.

1976 Drummer Keith Moon plays his final show with The Who. He would leave the band and enter a drug and alcohol program shortly after. On September 7, 1978, Moon died of an overdose of a sedative Heminevrin that had been prescribed to prevent seizures induced by alcohol withdrawal.

2015 Three Dog Night vocalist Cory Wells died suddenly at the age of 74. His lead vocals on "Eli's Coming", "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "Shambala" and "Never Been To Spain" helped the band achieve twenty-one Billboard Top 40 hits and place eleven albums on the Billboard 200 chart.
