40 years later

40 years ago today we saw our first big venue concert at the grand Madison Square Garden. Our seats were in the rafters and the band was loaded on drugs and alcohol. Over the rest of 77 we would go to several more large venue shows (Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Zappa, Jethro Tull and the Grateful Dead) all in better seats and in much better condition to put on a show.

It was after 77 that we realized that the hard rock Led Zeppelin which we grew up listing to was no long my style of music. We stopped listening to LZ, traded our Led Zeppelin albums and went in a new direction with my musical tastes.

Two years later one of my school friends couldn't believe we didn't think LZIV wasn't the great album ever made and had me over to listen to the whole album on him brothers hot new stereo. I realized then how much my musical tastes had changed and declared never to sit down and listen to this album again, let alone any song from this album.

so in honor of 40 years since seeing them live and around 38 years since hearing any of these songs (note a few years ago we listened to the opening of Stairway because of the Spirit lawsuit) at 12 midnight last night we sat down and listened to the whole album.

verdict:
We were amazed at how much of this album we remembered. However, it still falls on deaf ears to me. Only saving grace on this album is Battle of Evermore and Going to California both okay songs but nothing amazing. Otherwise the album is full of over the top moans from Plant with almost childish lyrics, repetitive constant annoying solos from Page, and Bonham's over the top smashing of his drum kit. Too many of these songs have no flow as LZ was too busy making sure they can show not all songs need to be a cool blues riff so add some over production.

While we do see this influenced many bands that we current listen to we will gladly go back to those albums and continue to stay away from LZ.

No big revelation here from the big board Zeppelin hater.

I would be far more shocked if you ever had anything good to say about them.

huh that was me saying something good about them

Actually feeling like a little 12 year old boy tonight. Went thru the first four albums today and some live stuff, although skipping a few songs (tv and movie songs). Sadly even though I've not heard these songs in 40 years I still over played them in my early pre-teen years.

Now doing the live concert in order on you tube. Most of the songs are their and if not another nite on the tour.
