1945 Peter Lewis (rhythm guitarist for Moby Grape) is born in Los Angeles, California, to actress Loretta Young and writer-producer Tom Lewis.

1947 Peter Banks (guitarist for Yes) is born Peter William Brockbanks in Chipping Barnet, North London, England.

1948 Thomas Delmer Pyle is born in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1974, under the name Artimus Pyle, he joins the band Lynyrd Skynyrd. His musical career with Skynyrd earns him induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

David Pack (frontman for Ambrosia) is born in Huntington Park, California.

1952 Jeff Carlisi (guitarist for .38 Special) is born in Boston, Massachusetts.

1956 Joe Satriani is born in Westbury, New York.

1956 Marky Ramone (drummer for The Ramones) is born Marc Steven Bell in Brooklyn, New York.

1956 Ian Curtis is born in Macclesfield, England. In 1976 he joins Joy Division, one of the most influential and critically acclaimed UK alternative bands. Following the singer's death in May 1980, the remaining members of the band continue to write and perform as New Order.

1991 Warrant lead singer Jani Lane marries Bobbie Brown, the girl from the "Cherry Pie" video. They divorce two years later.

2016 As he's done since 1972, Alice Cooper announces he's running for president, this time with the campaign slogan "A Troubled Man for Troubled Times." His platform includes "Adding Lemmy to Mount Rushmore" and "Getting Brian Johnson back in AC/DC." He loses to Donald Trump, but gains more exposure for his song "Elected."

This Day In Rock History: July 15th



1966 Jason Bonham, the son of legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, is born in Dudley, U.K. He filled in for his late father on the rare Led Zeppelin reunion shows, fronted a band named after him (Bonham) and was in Black Country Communion.

2017 The Eagles perform at the first Classic West festival with Country music star Vince Gill, helping fill the void left by the passing of Glenn Frey. Frey's son Deacon also performs with the band. Bob Seger contributes vocals on "Heartache Tonight.” The L.A. appearance is The Eagles' first full concert since Frey’s death in ‘16.

1966, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton formed Cream the three piece group only lasted 2 years, leaving behind some classic recordings including ‘Sunshine of Your Love,’ ‘Badge,’ ‘Strange Brew,’ and ‘White Room.’

1967, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Janis Ian, David Blue, Mike Settle, Tom Paxton and Eric Andersen all appeared at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island.

1981, US singer-songwriter Harry Chapin, who had success in the 70s with 'Taxi’, ‘W-O-L-D’ and a No. 1 ‘Cat’s In The Cradle’, was killed aged 38 suffering a cardiac arrest while driving on a New York expressway. His car was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer, causing the gas tank to explode.

1993, The first of the three day Phoenix festival in England started, featuring Sonic Youth, Faith No More, The Black Crowes, Julian Cope, Pop Will Eat Itself, Radiohead, Living Colour, Manic Street Preachers, Pulp, tickets 」49.

2012, Jon Lord the former keyboard player with Deep Purple, died aged 71. Lord was a co-founder of Deep Purple in 1968 and co-wrote many of the group's songs including Smoke On The Water. He also played with bands including Whitesnake. He had been receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer since last August.

2014, Blues guitarist Johnny Winter died at the age of 70 in Zurich, just days after playing at the Lovely Days Festival in Austria. Winter, who was instantly recognisable by his long white hair, worked with some of the greatest bluesmen, producing several albums for his childhood hero Muddy Waters - with whom he won a number of Grammys.

1944 Thomas Boggs (drummer for The Box Tops) is born in Wynne, Arkansas, but is raised mostly in Memphis, Tennessee.

1952 Stewart Copeland is born in Alexandria, Virginia. He spends his youth in Lebanon and then England. After moving back to the States to attend college, he returns to the UK to play drums for Curved Air and then The Police.

1967 Arlo Guthrie debuts "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" at the 1967 Newport Folk Festival. The song runs 18 minutes long and tells a true (but greatly exaggerated) story about how he was arrested one Thanksgiving morning for illegal dumping. The ticket later made him ineligible for the draft, keeping him out of the Vietnam War.

1972 Smokey Robinson performs his final show with The Miracles at the Carter Barron Amphitheater in Washington, DC. At the end of the show, Smokey introduces his replacement, 20-year-old Billy Griffin.

1996 Styx drummer John Panozzo dies at age 47 when his liver fails after years of drinking.

1993, Guns N' Roses appeared at River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in front of 80,000 people, the final show on their Use Your Illusion Tour. A highlight of the night was English drummer Cozy Powell playing drums with Matt Sorum, dressed as a Domino's Pizza delivery boy.

2011, Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance at a tribute to Clarence Clemons at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, N.J. The boss played a 45 minute set to an intimate crowd of 400. Clemons who died on June 18th of this year was a prominent member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, playing the tenor saxophone with him since 1971. Springsteen and Clemons had first met at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park.

1972 A bomb explodes under a Rolling Stones equipment truck in Montreal and although no one is hurt, the blast blows out the cones of 30 speakers stored inside. It's never determined who planted the dynamite and the show went on as planned.

1996 Chas Chandler, who was the bassist for The Animals as well as Jimi Hendrix's manager, died in a British hospital at age 57. He had been undergoing tests related to an aortic aneurysm.

1947 Wolfgang Flur (of Kraftwerk) is born in Frankfurt, Germany.

1947 Mick Tucker (drummer for Sweet) is born in Harlesden, North West London, England.

1949 Mike Vale (bassist for Tommy James & the Shondells) is born

1949 Terence "Geezer" Butler (bassist, lyricist for Black Sabbath) is born in Aston, Birmingham, England.

1952 Chet McCracken (drummer for The Doobie Brothers) is born in Seattle, Washington.

1974 In West Hampstead, London, The Moody Blues open the world's first Quadrophonic recording studio.

1991 Fourteen years after the deadly crash of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Baton Rouge-bound aircraft, the surviving members of the band, reunited under the name "Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991," return to the Louisiana city to kick off a new tour. Shirts sold for the event read, "Baton Rouge! After 14 years! We're finally here..."

1966, Bobby Fuller leader of The Bobby Fuller Four was found dead in his car in Los Angeles aged 23. Fuller died mysteriously from gasoline asphyxiation, while parked outside his apartment. Police labelled it a suicide, but the possibility of foul play has always been mentioned. Had the 1966 US No.9 single 'I Fought The Law' written by Sonny Curtis of Buddy Holly's Crickets and covered by The Clash.

1988, Nico died after suffering a minor heart attack while riding a bicycle on holiday with her son in Ibiza Spain. The German born singer-songwriter and keyboard player with Velvet Underground, had also worked as a fashion model and actress.

1991, The first night of the 'Lollapalooza' tour at The Compton Terrace, Phoenix, featuring, Living Colour, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Jane's Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, Henry Rollins Band and The Butthole Surfers.

2001, KISS added another product to their ever-growing merchandising universe: the "Kiss Kasket." The coffin featured the faces of the four founding members of the band, the Kiss logo and the words "Kiss Forever." Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell was buried in one after he was shot and killed on-stage in Dec 2004.

2002, The Rolling Stones crew chief, 54 year old Royden Magee, who had worked with the band for 30 years, died during a rehearsal in Toronto. A spokesman for the band said Magee had said that he wasn't feeling well and went to another room to take a nap. The Stones had just finished dinner and resumed rehearsing when they got word that Magee had collapsed and stopped breathing. He was taken by ambulance to nearby Sunnybrook Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival. The members of the band said they were devastated by his death.

1960 Roy Orbison saw his first record, "Only The Lonely" climb into the Top 5 in the United States after The Everly Brothers and Elvis both turned the song down. Over the next six years, The Big O would have 22 Top 40 hits.

1978 Gerry Rafferty, once a member of Stealers Wheel, earns a Gold record for "Baker Street", which reached #2 in the US and #3 in the UK.

2017 Red West, a boyhood friend and member of Elvis Presley's "Memphis Mafia", passed away at the age of 81 after suffering an aortic aneurysm. West appeared in many of the singer's movies as well as in Road House, Black Sheep Squadron and Goodbye Solo.

1931 Thomas "Papa Dee" Allen (percussionist, vocalist for War) is born in Wilmington, Delaware.

This Day In Rock History: July 19th


1947, Born on this day, Brian May, guitarist, singer and songwriter with Queen who had the 1975 UK No.1 single 'Bohemian Rhapsody' which returned to No.1 in 1991. Queen scored over 40 other UK Top 40 singles, and also scored the 1980 US No.1 single 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love'. May had the solo 1992 UK No.5 single 'Too Much Love Will Kill You'. May was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2005 for 'services to the music industry and his charity work'. May earned a PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College, London, in 2007.

1952, Born on this day, Allen Collins, guitarist with southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd who had the 1974 US No. 8 single 'Sweet Home Alabama' the 1977 US No. 5 album Street Survivors and the 1982 UK No.21 single 'Freebird'. Collins was behind the wheel in a car accident in 1986 that killed his girlfriend and left him paralysed from the waist down. Collins died on January 23, 1990 from chronic pneumonia, a complication of the paralysis.

1974, The Ozark Music Festival was held over three days on the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia, Missouri. One of the largest music festivals ever held, some estimates have put the crowd count at 350,000 people. Acts who appeared included, Bachman傍urner Overdrive, Blue ヨyster Cult, The Eagles, America, Marshall Tucker Band, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Boz Scaggs, Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Electric Flag, Joe Walsh, Aerosmith and Spirit.

1948 Keith Godchaux (keyboardist for Grateful Dead throughout the '70s) is born in Seattle, Washington, but will grow up in Concord, California.

1985 Joan Jett calls up-and-coming heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson before his fight with Larry Sims, which Tyson wins handily. The superstitious Tyson insists on getting a call from Jett before every fight, which he does until breaking tradition for his bout against Buster Douglas on February 11, 1990 - Tyson's first loss.

1994 The Rolling Stones release Voodoo Lounge.

1975: Aerosmith peaked at number thirty-six on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Sweet Emotion” their first top forty hit.

1980: The final World Series of Rock in Cleveland took place at Municipal Stadium. The bill included Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band, Eddie Money, The J. Geils Band & Def Leppard.

1986: Van Halen headlined the Texxas Jam at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Other acts on the bill included Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Loverboy, Dio & Krokus.

1988: Bruce Springsteen performed his first concert behind the Iron Curtain in East Berlin, Germany where 180,000 people attended & many more watched on television.
