Well this will be fun! Which of the Beatles' ending tracks is the best?

Re: Best Finishing Track

Yep, "A Day In The Life" is it.

The contest is actually for second place, and if "Her Majesty" wasn't tacked on after "The End," I might go for the latter. As it is, I'll take "Twist And Shout."

Re: Best Finishing Track

This is tough. I picked my choice for opening track easily in the other thread, but this one's not as easy for me..

My gut feeling is to pick "A Day In The Life".
(We're ignoring the Inner Groove)

But "Tomorrow Never Knows" is an amazing end to a great album, and it gave a hint of what was to come.

And "Twist And Shout" is fantastic. The last song recorded at the end of a 12 hour session - the lead vocal screamed by an exhausted John Lennon.

It's times like this that I realize for perhaps the millionth time just how freakin' amazing the Beatles were.

Re: Best Finishing Track

Well, I was able to narrow it down to 3 rather easily. Tomorrow Never Knows, I'll Be Back, and A Day In The Life. I'll go with I'll Be Back on this one. It's one of their more underrated tunes.

Re: Best Finishing Track

I voted for "Her Majesty" but consider this a vote for that whole suite of songs that closes Abbey Road. Nothing short of stunning.

Re: Best Finishing Track

" A Day In The Life", but if Her Majesty wasn't there to muck things up I might have voted for The End medley - what a way to go out.

Re: Best Finishing Track

I just gotta say...

Dizzy Miss Lizzie, Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby,
I'll Be Back, Run For Your Life are all great songs too...

and Get Back is a great way to end ''Let It Be''....

"I'd like to thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves,
I hope we passed the audition.''

classic.

Yep! Although I prefer the early Beatles overall, "A Day In The Life" certainly puts a dramatic and emphatic exclamation point on Sgt. Pepper. It's my favorite Beatle song to end an album and most likely the most powerful of ALL the Beatle closers.

Re: Best Finishing Track

This ones tough, I wish I could vote for all of them. I picked A Day in the Life though. I never really saw Her Majesty as the end to Abbey Road, The End was always the end for me.

It's funny that you mention the "dark", Run For Your Life because I just discovered something I hadn't known.
I always thought that that line "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man" was a pretty "heavy" line for 1965. But I just found out that the line was in a 1955 Elvis Presley song called, "Baby Let's Play House". It was originally recorded that year by a black blues guy named Arthur Gunter - and then Elvis recorded it. So John must have know the line and thought it fit into his song 10 years later. Pretty interesting, even though it takes a little mystique away from the fact that I thought it was a typical edgy Lennon line.

Re: Best Finishing Track

Yeah, 'A Day In The Life' for the win. Ironically, I almost voted for 'Get Back' (and I dont even really like the song all that much) just due to the whole 'sure hope we passed the audition' bit. Thought that was a nice touch. Our local rock station usually says 'You sure did' after that tune. I think its in the rule book or something for them.
