1991, American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis died of a stroke and pneumonia. His 1959 album 'Kind of Blue', is a major influence on jazz music. Davis is considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.

1935, Born on this day, Jerry Lee Lewis, US singer, keyboards, (1958 UK No.1 & US No.1 single 'Great Balls Of Fire', 1957 multi million seller 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On').

1939, Born on this day, Tommy Boyce, singer, songwriter. 1968 US No 8 single with Bobby Hart, 'I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite'. Wrote 'Last Train To Clarksville', 'I'm Not Your Stepping Stone' and 'Scooby-Doo Where Are You.' Sold over 40m records. Boyce committed suicide on 23rd November 1994.

1948, Born on this day, Mark Farner, American singer, guitarist and songwriter, best known as the lead singer and lead guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad who had the US No.1 single with their version of 'The Loco-Motion' which was produced by Todd Rundgren. They were the most successful US Heavy Metal band of the 70s selling over 20m albums.

1990 Rick Nelson's sons Gunnar and Matthew have a number one hit on Billboard's Hot 100 with "Love and Affection", becoming the third generation of Nelsons to accomplish that feat. Their Grandfather, Ozzie Nelson, led his orchestra to the top of the chart in 1932 with "And Then Some" and Rick topped all others in 1958 with "Poor Little Fool" and in 1961 with "Travelin' Man".

1989: Bruce Springsteen stopped in Matt痴 Saloon in Prescott, AZ to jam with the house band for an hour. He overheard a barmaid discussing financial problems & one week later, the barmaid received a check from Springsteen for $100,000.

1968 Bassist Brad Smith (of Blind Melon) is born in West Point, Mississippi.

1991 MTV plays the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video for the first time, giving most Americans their first look at Nirvana. A little over a month later, the song is #1 on the Hot 100.

1967 - Mickey Hart joined the Grateful Dead.

1984 - Prince's single "Let's Go Crazy" hit No. 1. He then held the No. 1 single, album and film simultaneously. Only the Beatles had accomplished the feat previously.

1974, Police were called to a Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blue Oyster Cult concert after a fight broke out between two sound engineers. The Skynyrd roadie claimed that the sound had been deliberately turned off during the bands set.

2016, A schoolboy from Philadelphia who skipped class to meet his musical hero handed his teacher an absence note with a difference. The typewritten note was signed by Bruce Springsteen. Fifth-grader Michael Fenerty met the star at a "meet-and-greet" in the Free Library of Philadelphia when Springsteen was in town signing copies of his new autobiography, Born to Run.

1940 Dewey Martin (drummer for Buffalo Springfield) is born Walter Milton Dwayne Midkiff in Chesterville, Ontario, Canada.

1947 Marc Bolan (frontman for T. Rex) is born Mark Feld in Stoke Newington, London, England.

1955 James Dean is killed in a car accident at age 24. Dean dies around the same time rock and roll comes alive (the #1 song the day he dies: Pat Boone's cover of "Ain't That A Shame" - clearly America is at a crossroads).

1964 Trey Anastasio of Phish is born in Fort Worth, Texas.

1967 BBC Radio One goes on the air. The first song played is "Flowers In The Rain" by The Move.

1965, Bob Dylan appeared at Carnegie Hall in New York City. He introduced his new touring band on this tour, made up of guitarist Robbie Robertson, organist Garth Hudson, bassist Rick Danko, pianist Richard Manual and drummer Levon Helm. They will become known simply as The Band.

1970, Jimi Hendrix was buried at The Greenwood Cemetery at the Dunlop Baptist Church Seattle. Among the mourners; Miles Davis, Eric Burdon, Johnny Winter and members of Derek and the Dominoes.

2004, The Lord Mayor of Melbourne officially opened 'AC/DC' Lane after the veteran rockers. The Lord Mayor erected the sign to cheers and bagpipes playing the bands song 'Long Way To The Top'. The City of Melbourne had extra copies of the sign made, in anticipation of fans stealing them.

1930 Singer/actor Richard Harris, who has an unlikely hit with "MacArthur Park," is born in Limerick, Ireland.

1947 Martin Turner (bassist/lead vocalist for Wishbone Ash) is born in Torquay, Devon, England.

1948 Michael "Cub" Koda (frontman for Brownsville Station) is born in Detroit, Michigan. Wrote the group's 1973 hit "Smokin' in the Boy's Room," which would late be covered by Motley Crue.

1970 Janis Joplin makes her last recordings, singing "Mercedes Benz," which is included on her posthumous Pearl album a capella. She also records a goofy version of "Happy Trails" as a birthday present for John Lennon. Joplin dies three days later.

2011 After 28 years and two children together, Gene Simmons (62) and Shannon Tweed (54) finally get married. Their wedding song is "At Last," sung by their daughter Sophie.

2015 Motorhead unveil their own branded whiskey (even though lead vocalist and bassist Lemmy Kilmister has dropped whiskey in favor of vodka for 'health reasons'). Motorhead Drinks (which already includes beer, wine and vodka) is a collaborative effort between the band and Mackmyra, a Swedish distillery. Initially, the whiskey is only available in Sweden.
