1969 Janis Joplin is arrested at her concert in Tampa, Florida and charged with using "vulgar and indecent language". The incident began when a policeman with a bullhorn ordered people in the audience to sit down and Joplin responded, "Don't **** with those people! Hey, Mister, what're you so uptight about? Did you buy a five dollar ticket?" When police backstage instructed Joplin to tell the audience to take their seats, she replied, "I'm not telling them shit." After being arrested in her dressing room, Joplin was released on bond and all charges were eventually dropped.

1962 The Four Seasons' "Big Girls Don't Cry" reaches the top spot on the Billboard singles chart, just as their first hit, "Sherry" did earlier in the year. Songwriter Bob Crewe later said that he was inspired to write the song after he heard actor John Payne use the phase "big girls don't cry" in a 1956 movie called Slightly Scarlet. In the UK, the song reached #13.

1937 Gerry McGee (lead guitarist for The Ventures) is born in Eunice, Louisiana.

1938 Gordon Lightfoot is born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

1944 Gene Clark (tambourine player, guitarist, vocalist for The Byrds) is born Harold Eugene Clark in Tipton, Missouri.

1946 Martin Barre (guitarist for Jethro Tull) is born in Kings Heath, Birmingham, England.

1975 Tommy Bolin's debut solo album, Teaser, is released. The album runs the gamut stylistically, and spawns the rocking title track, which Mötley Crüe covers years later.

Re: This Day In Rock History

This Day In Rock History: November 18th

1970 Led Zeppelin III was at No.1 on the UK & US album charts. The original cover and interior gatefold art consisted of a surreal collection of random images. Behind the front cover was a rotatable laminated card disc, covered with more images, including photos of the band members, which showed through holes in the cover. The distinctive cover was based on a suggestion of Jimmy Page's that it should resemble an old-fashioned gardening seed chart. Designed by Richard Drew aka Zacron, the sleeve photographs were taken by fellow Leeds Polytechnic lecturer Martin Salisbury.

2017 Australian musician and songwriter Malcolm Young died age 64. Young was best known as a co-founder, rhythm guitarist, backing vocalist and songwriter for AC/DC. Except for a brief absence in 1988, he was with the band from its November 1973 beginning until retiring permanently in 2014. Young was born in 1953 in Glasgow before his family emigrated to Australia when he was 10. His family confirmed he was suffering from dementia in 2014.

1968 The Spiral Staircase record their million selling tune, "More Today Than Yesterday", which will reach #12 on the Billboard chart and #7 on the Cash Box Best Sellers list the following Spring. Unfortunately, about 18 months following the single's release, after issuing one album and a couple of more singles, the group disbanded due to management issues and squabbles over finances.

2015 Carly Simon finally revealed part of the mystery behind one of Pop music's most enduring puzzles: the inspiration for her 1972 hit "You're So Vain". Simon said the subject in question is actually based on a composite of three of the men in her life around that time, and the second verse is about actor Warren Beatty.
