Re: Aerosmith vs. Rush

Rush.

Aerosmith had three great classic albums, and a couple of decent ones.

Rush were great throughout the late '70s and early '80s.

Re: Aerosmith vs. Rush

BTW, I'll smirkingly note that when Counterparts (possibly the most popular Rush messageboard on the web) had a "top 10 worst bands" thread, Aerosmith were named by several posters.

KISS, Dream Theater, Bob Seger, The Grateful Dead, Metallica, Bon Jovi, Guns n' Roses, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones were also popular choices.

I find Dream Theater to be a particularly strange choice from a Rush messageboard, because they're actually fairly similar groups. The other groups don't really surprise me except maybe for Aerosmith and the Stones.

Eh... I think a lot of traditional prog fans hate anything and everything associated with prog metal, because it's considered "dumb, overblown frettboard wankery." Of course, Rush fans who hate prog metal miss the ironic fact that 2112 helped inspire the whole genre.

The distaste for The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith probably stems from Neil Peart's rather harsh criticisms of those two bands, and the average nerd's disapproval for bands full of nasty-looking guys singing about sex and drugs.

If you've got a pocket protector, those were the assholes who beat you up in high school.

Plus, Blues Hammer says "you're not allowed to play blues unless you're an 80 year old black man, or a downriver hillbilly who thinks he's an 80 year old black man."
