Re: 80's Heavy Metal

Zeppboy posted a Metal Blade comp earlier, that had Détente on it.

They only had one album, but it was a real scorcher. The band broke up due to lineup problems, something that happened to EVERY band Dawn Crosby sang for. Dawn was one of my favorite female metal vocalists, but she died in the mid '90s. Just another casualty of the needle.

Re: 80's Heavy Metal

Here's a real treat of early '80s doom metal: Pagan Altar.

For anybody who doesn't know, these guys helped inspire Solstice, Candlemass, St. Vitus, and probably half a dozen other bands to revive the sounds of Sabbath for a new generation.

Sadly, they were rejected by record label after record label, meaning that while their debut album was recorded in 1982 (resulting in a lot of bootlegging and tape trading by fans), it didn't actually see official release until 1998. The reaction was overwhelmingly positive, and Pagan Altar continues to record new material and play gigs to this day. Most reports say their new material is stellar too!

Hey, it's not my place to judge what someone chooses to do with their body, but the big H is one shitty way to die.

Nasty stuff indeed, and frighteningly cheap these days.

How about this stunning 80's prog metal band CRIMSON GLORY.

Crimson Glory (1986)

Transcendence (1988)

It's a shame they only did one album. They were pretty good.

I have both of those albums, and love 'em. Transcendence is absolutely brilliant.

They were gonna do a reunion album and tour, but Midnight got in trouble with the law again. The Florida police pulled him over with a car full of coke and a 16 year-old girl.

It's the same shit they kicked him out of the band for the first time!

I didn't know that. It would have been a real delight for me to listen some new materials with the classic line up. Midnight was (maybe still is) a great vocal.

Re: 80's Heavy Metal

Most people don't think of it, but Soundgarden were around in the 1980s, and they fucking killed. They were more of a metal band back then, practically doom. They were also practical jokers though. You could tell they loved stuff like Vitus, Zeppelin, and Trouble, but they were just as likely to make fun of metal as they were to play it straight.

Re: 80's Heavy Metal

We should make this thread a sticky after it's reached 500 posts - there's so much info in here for any metal fan it would be a shame if it dropped out of sight!

Zeppboy, yes???

Re: 80's Heavy Metal

Ministry did a LOT to bring industrial music out of its cult fan status. Once upon a time, it was something only English anarchists listened to.

I'd post some of their songs, but the band's old music is all on Sire Records, which belongs to Warner now. Warner is in a royalties dispute with Google, and they ordered all of their music and videos yanked fro YouTube.

Corporate lawyers are evil slimy people.

Re: 80's Heavy Metal

I'm not much really into heavy metal but I like Deep Purple, Foreigner, not really sure they were on 80s.

I like Metallica!

Re: 80's Heavy Metal

I'm not a fan of Foreigner, but Ian McDonald (who played sax, keys, flute, and guitar for them) was awesome with King Crimson.

I am closing this and will start a new one. I decided to stick this since there was interest in it.
