Re: Focus

Both are good suggestions. Mu favourite is Hamburger Concerto (which is not a live album).

I agree...

I have Focus ''Live At The Rainbow'' and ''Moving Waves''

and would highly recommend both albums...

Also, I have the album ''In And Out Of Focus'' which is their first album, but must admit, the vocals kill this album, in my opinion of course, and you can see why most of Focus's albums have hardly no singing on them.... but, the first album contains two brilliant instrumentals, first one is simply titled ''Focus'' and the second instrumental is entitled ''Anonymus''...both songs alone, are worth the purchase of this album.

Re: Focus

Whenever I hear Hocus Pocus I immediatly think of being 6 or 7 years old listening to KTELS 20 Greatest Hits album-I think it also had Crocodile Rock and Little Willy Wont Go home amungst others.

That is my pick too. Thijs van Leer and Jan Akkerman are a great duo. Jan is a very underappreciated guitarist.Mostly because after Focus he went solo and put out experimental guitar, blues guitar, jazz guitar, classical guitar albums.

Surprised no one mentioned "Sylvia" great song
PS: I love the Opera like vocals.

Re: Focus

I just picked up "Hocus Pocus - The Best of Focus". It's good, but not great, and I get the impression that a "Best Of" isn't the best way to listen to this band.

I may try and pick up "Moving Waves".

This is how Focus should have been heard, LIVE. Checkout this clip and listen to Jan Akkerman on guitar.

Re: Focus

That's a cool clip, and somehow, they seem way more "out there" live than they do in the studio!

Is there a particularly great Focus live release out there?

Re: Focus

one LP, Moving Waves
one best of CD

The revival band had a CD, and it was OK, but no Akkerman.

Re: Focus

I have all their albums and I would recommend Moving Waves or Hamburguer Concerto for a starter, because it sums up very well their career.

Focus 3 may not appeal to some because of the many long songs (even some Focus fans don't like the album very much).

Mother Focus is adequated for those who do not like long songs at all, but it is much different from their sound. In and Out of Focus should be a good call for those who are scared of long suites.

Live At Rainbow is top-notch too, but I don't know if it is adequate for a starter, because many people don't enjoy very much live albums.
