....but, you know, seeing this thread here this morning is so bizarre, because yesterday I really wanted to post in my blogg and rave about Selling England, and then I see this thread

I hadn't been able to listen to the whole of Selling England for about 2 years. The last time I listened to it, was when my late father was given his prognosis at the hospital, and so for a long time I couldn't listen to it...

...until this week, and I have to say how GOOD Selling England sounds again after all this time

So much so, that I've been playing it over and over.

Anyone who doesn't "get" Genesis, go get yourselves Selling England By The Pound, and play it a few times

Firth of Fifth and the Cinema Show have to be 2 of my all time fav Genesis tracks (but there are others too!).

And I've always thought, to those not from the UK, what they made of the lyrics at the end which of course are all names of UK supermarkets (The safe way home = Safeway, tess co-operates = Tesco, and the Co-Op)

And oh, how wonderful it could have been, if Genesis proper, performed Firth of Fifth live last year...
'Tis a really fine album, isn't it? I remember lamenting to Kath that some of the staples of old Genesis got the slash-and-cut treatment on this last tour; snippets of Cinema show and Firth, etc. And Darryl's spotlight moment is Steve's solo from Firth. Stop, thief!! It didn't have Steve's tone or emotion behind it. I know, I'm just a wrinkled, old fuddydud lost in the past.
it's one of their best
I am sure, too, from memory, that Genesis the threesome did also include a familiar bit of firth of fifth when I saw them last year, it wasn't just my imagination, now that you've mentioned it too! And I'm always in a constant timewarp, so don't worry about it

I never got those lines. We have a Safeway in America too. Yeah the whole album is priceless, after seeing this thread yesterday I played Foxtrot, Selling England Harrod the barrel from Nursery Cryme(had to hear it ) today while I drove around doing errands.

Re: Firth of Fifth - which version?

I miss having the LP, with lyrics in full, including the bit about the tin of baked beans going down from 19 and a half pence (or something like that!).

Got it on cassette, but I am gonna go out & get Selling England on cd asap now, I know it'll sound sooooooooo much better!

Re: Firth of Fifth - which version?

and those Knights of the Green Shield stamp and shout, reminds me of when I was a wee nipper, whenever we went shopping, we'd collect Green Shield Stamps & when the booklet of stuck down stamps was full, we'd get a free gift (a bit like bingo!)

Great lyrics!
