This is the only Coroner album I own, I might have only played it once! Am I missing out?

I can't even remember what it sounds like.
That album is alright, but it's definitely raw and early for them. You listen to it, and think "alright, this part sounds like Voivod, this part sounds like Celtic Frost, and this one sounds like Megadeth." The main influences were there, but they hadn't really gelled yet.

If I were gonna recommend a Coroner album, it'd be either Punishment for Decadence or Mental Vortex. Those are both incredible pieces of metal. No More Color is excellent too, though a little over-technical in parts. Some of the songs have that "Frayed Ends of Sanity" feeling, where you wonder if they were just trying to see how many wall-to-wall notes they could cram onto the tape.

I like Grin (their fifth and final album) quite a bit too, but it's much more controversial with fans. There are keyboards, vocal effects, some extra percussion and electronic drums, frettless bass, slower tempos, fewer solos, and lots of guitar effects pedals. Coroner had been listening to Sepultura and Prong, and it showed. Many fans consider this their "sellout" album, because it takes some influences from industrial metal and 1990s post-thrash bands.

Thanks. I'm gonna try to get a hold of more Coroner.

Damn, speaking of Prong......Prong fuckin' rule!

One of my favorite records of the era. They played a club in my home town, around 1989. I was talking to singer Steve Souza outside of their bus when somebody inside the bus yelled "if you ain't with the band or sucking a d*ck, get the f*ck out." A small group of locals filed off the bus. The last one was a girl from the local scene who stepped off the bus saying " I ain't sucking nobody's mother f*cking d*ck!"

That was our catch phrase for at least the next year.
I like Exodus. The first few albums were brutal speed metal classics.

I have heard of Rage - - but I don't own anything by them. Another band to check out.

Yeah I love Accept. Fast As A Shark is one of my favorite metal songs. They could be real heavy when they wanted to.

Re: 80's Heavy Metal

Love Accept. "Balls to the Wall" is a camp classic of '80s metal videos, in there with "Breaking the Law," "Run to the Hills" and "I Wanna Rock."

With regards to Rage, I've only heard Perfect Man, but it's marvelous. The soloing on it is some of the best I've ever heard in power metal.

For any and all Accept fans, I recommend a terribly underrated and obscure German metal band named Crackjaw. Sadly, they only made one album, but it's the sort of thing I WISH Accept had followed up Metal Heart with.

Re: 80's Heavy Metal

Another great German metal band is Warlock. Theire entire catalogue came out in the 80's. Doro Pesch (for me) is the best female metal singer ever.

True As Steel is a great album...but the earlier ones are pure Heavy Metal.

Warlock are great. They don't have a bad album either.

Re: 80's Heavy Metal

I actually saw Doro earlier this year. She was doing an anniversary tour, and pulled out a lot of old tunes. I think they opened with the title track from Burning the Witches. Absolutely fantastic.

My favorite female metal vocalist ever is probably Dawn Crosby. She was singer for Détente and Fear of God. Sadly, she only sang on three albums, and then died of a heroin overdose.

of course, Tarja Turunen, Anneke Van Giersbergen, and Liv Kristine Espenćs are also near the top of my list.

Wow...lucky you! I'm not sure they ever came around here even in the 80's.
