In another study, people prefer ice cream even though they claim to eat vegetables. The results of this study have been the guiding light of the music industry as long a there has been such a thing. Give them something different, but not too different.

I think it depends more on what the new music is rather than its being unfamiliar. I remember being crazy for Snow Patrol before I knew their name just from hearing a couple of songs on tv shows.

Yeah, a pretty unsurprising finding...this is why focus groups don't work.

To quote Bad Blake from the movie Crazy Heart when talking about a new song he wrote:
"That's the way it is with good ones, you're sure you've heard them before."

Although, I like to think I am not like this...and I do eat a lot of vegetables

I'm sure we all do, but we would not be statistically significant.

Re: We Don't Like Unfamiliar Music, Even Though We Claim We Do

The only thing here that's peculiar to me is... people claimed they prefer unfamiliar music???

If you ask me: Hey Deja, do you want to listen to Neil Young, or would you like to listen to this new band called Pale Chalice? I would choose Neil Young... 100 times out of 100.

I love to listen to new music, but do I prefer it over my favorites? Of course not, that's ridiculous. They wouldn't be my favorites if I'd exchange them that easily.

But you always have access to Neil Young albums...if your statement were true you would never listen to any new albums?

Hehe, not necessarily. It only means that I'll never listen to Pale Chalice. The mitigating factor is that Pale Chalice is just some random new band someone's just brought up to me for the first time. I've never heard them or even heard of them before, "new music" in its purest form.

I don't always have access to Neil Young albums. The vast, overwhelming majority of new music I get into is music I discover at work, at the bar, at friends' houses, and similar scenarios where I'm not in control of the dial.

I can go *looking* for new music on the rare occasion that it's absolutely necessary, but my success rate with artists I try to 'force' is not good. So I pretty much exclusively leave it up to serendipity. Every one of my top 30 favorite all-time artists, they all fell into my lap. So I'm pretty confident leaving it up to chance basically 100% of the time. By the time I put that record in for the first time, the artist behind it is already familiar and has earned my trust.

'Course I'm not saying it's common, that's just what I do. Even so, I would think people preferring their favorites is a pretty obvious conclusion, as roser and others said.

Every song we have ever heard was unfamiliar to us at one time?

Yeah, I always look forward to cranking up the radio to "big ole jet airliner" every day! I tell you that song never gets old.

Re: We Don't Like Unfamiliar Music, Even Though We Claim We Do

I always explored the boundaries of almost everything probably
for the first 30 years of my musical life. And through these
many stages I knew what I like and disliked pretty quickly.
Of course music from 1965-95 changed out many times
too. We all know what genres have been formulated
and thrown our way in that time.

Since the early 90's I have been more content to enjoy
the harvest of what I saw as peak crop, yep, mainly
70's since there was so much change during that time.
Now I am more content to enjoy those periods and
don't have much interest in newer music anymore.
When your time is growing short one gets a little
more dedicated to those first 30 years or so. I do
spend a lot of time searching out music that I was
always curious about and go for it, but rarely the
new stuff, so I have gotten lazy in broadening my
horizons, but I've already done that for a long
time already.

There is always hidden treasure though, through archival
material, etc. I am listening to more reggae these days
because maybe the time is right, I don't know. I'm
listening to some Bob Marley at Leeds from 1973.
It is as good a Marley live record as I've heard and who
would have thought it. Few folks knew about him then,
but this material is brilliant, loose and understated.

I guess the point I am trying to make for a hopeless
topic is there is a lot new in a lot of the old.

Re: We Don't Like Unfamiliar Music, Even Though We Claim We Do

Market researchs founding out that people like familiar music better than unfamiliar music, good. But didn't they discovered this long ago when they tried to force Britney Spears and co. down to our throats?

This is as obvious as saying that water is wet. And this is why the top charts are dominated by non talented musicians. People don't like to broad their horizons and not just with music, even a dog could realize that.

Chasing Cars is unfamiliar to me. Thanks for the suggestion.
