Considering his varied and voluminous body of work I'd think you'd be hard pressed not to vote for him as the greatest "classic rock guitarist" (at least out of the ones mentioned).

Re: Eric Clapton voted greater than Page, Young, Townshend and Richards

Over the last 20 years he's probably been the best and most prolific of them.

All-time I'd rate him beneath the rest of the group, though. His material has been boring and tame compared to the others.

Now if this was Neil Young we were talking about...

Re: Eric Clapton voted greater than Page, Young, Townshend and Richards

I think he deserves it. A real "mensch". His handling of the "Concert for George" (Harrison) together with Jeff Lynne won him over for me, especially with his "While My Guitar Genltly Weeps". Heart wreching..

Besides his Cream material, Clapton has always been overrated. I would not put him above any of those other 4 names.

Agreed. Much acclaim due to a reputation that has lacked supporting data for about 30 years...

Re: Eric Clapton voted greater than Page, Young, Townshend and Richards

On the strength of his work in The Yardbirds, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominos he probably deserves it.

Not really, all the bands you mentioned released the bulk over their material over 40 years ago. Not sure how much Clapton actually contributed much to the Yardbirds, many notable musicians in that band. Both Blind Faith and Derek & the Dominoes only had one studio album each, both ages ago too, 1969 and 1970. Cream's the only project i can think of where Clapton did some impressive work. Solo, hes been unimpressive besides the occasional song in the 70's. Many far more deserving artists of his reputation.

Cream was also around 40 years ago so I guess we should dismiss his contributions in that group too.
