Re: Musicians Making Extra Millions for Playing Private Parties

Nothing remotely wrong with that. Mozart did it as well. I don't see how making money playing for Ticketmaster is supposed to be more noble than playing for someone else?

If I was astronomically rich I would definitely commission private concerts. But only if I have money left over from producing a television series based on The Miseducation of Cameron Post.

Re: Musicians Making Extra Millions for Playing Private Parties

Unless I channeled that money directly into charity, I
would feel disgraced, myself. Sure it's idealistic thinking,
but that how I roll these days. A lot would depend on
who was throwing the party too.

If there was so much as a hint that this included the
'filthy rich' that have attained their wealth in ways
that I get to read about every other day, upcharging
to the hilt and sending straight to charity, provided they
pay the outrageous charges (of course they could),
would be something I would and could not wear a
wink about. If true fans were involved and they
are low-balling, then discount their offer and
consider the 'private party' as needed income
and have a blast.

A little due diligence on the musician's part should
ensure who one is playing for. If I were starving
to death then I might play my instrument in disgrace,
though to be honest. However, I doubt that is the
case for most of these 'private party bands'.
Most of them are making hand-over-fist money.
And I think some of them are somewhat
charity-generous with these funds.

This is all in a perfect world scenario of course, which
does not exist, but I tried.

I say of you can land a gig like that and are interested in doing it then go for it.

"Mozart did it as well."

Horrible comparison, IMO. Mozart charged admission to his "private" concerts...

Isn't it funny how things change over time, yet they don't change?

The more things seem to change the more they stay the same.

It's a capitalist society.. If you're not going to do it, someone else will; so may as well make some cash wherever one can.

Re: Musicians Making Extra Millions for Playing Private Parties

But do you draw the line at who your play for because of political reasons, or ethical reasons? I mean, do you play a KKK gathering, or for a Korean Dictator or the annual Taliban family reunion?
