anyone have a Kindle?

Had some questions for a Kindle owner. I take it you don't need a data plan, but how do you get books onto the device? If it requires a USB connection to your laptop / pc / whathaveyou then I'm out. My old pc tower only has serial ports.

Anyway this would work with my hardware limitations? I've never been able to find a serial port to usb connection.

Kindle has Wi Fi. If you have a wireless modem you just connect to the amazon store that way. If not you'd have to go somewhere with wifi. The newer ones (and I believe the Kobo reader) have free 4G so you can connect from anywhere, but obviously that's a little priceyer.

Re: anyone have a Kindle?

Meant to place this in the gear and technology board. Can a mod move it?

Don't have wifi - I live in the stone age of a gateway pc tower with, lol, windows 95!

We have an auction at work with two Kindles up for grabs so now I know not to bid.

Re: anyone have a Kindle?

Don't want one I would much rather hold a book in my hot little hands.

Re: anyone have a Kindle?

When you connet your Kindle to your computer, a folder should appear or you can find it under my computer. You can drag PDF files as well as MP3's to the documents folder in your Kindle folder. When ordering from Amazon, I believe a folder of Kindle files should be presented when you download, then you just transfer those to your Kindle's document folder.

This was written with my Kindle. :)

Me too. I like books. I don't get the appeal of a Kindle...must be something I'm missing.

i'm thinking of kindle cause i like amazon, and i don't know the future of b&n, what with it being the last large brick&m bookstore left with borders' closure.

my next plan is to head out to best buy, which have it in stock, and let go with my faqs.

i love books too, paperback, hard cover - and i'm still on the fence. i know i don't need it, so it would be a feel good purchase whathaveyou.

Re: anyone have a Kindle?

Kindles are very good when you are travelling instead of lugging a whole pile of books around

But...where would you go that you'd need a pile of books?...and if you were gonna read a pile of books, wouldn't it make sense to stay home and do it?

Re: anyone have a Kindle?

Another thing...and this is not me being facetious - I just don't know much about how it all works. What happens with your Kindle if Amazon goes belly up?

Re: anyone have a Kindle?

Well I've had mine for about 4 months and use it travelling to and from college/travelling by train to Melbourne and on the plane to visit my parents in New Zealand. I have 12 books on it at the moment and as I love to read it is just so handy.

Re: anyone have a Kindle?

Beware of the black spots that may form on the screen, they emerge like fluctuations into space, but they remain on your screen even when it is off. I am going to have to return mine unfortunately because this after four months of ownership, with more than a hundred files loaded.

Despite its seemingly conveniences, never put full reliance on an electronic device.
