Radio Daze
 

So this prized piece of furniture took centre stage in our small parlour (That's front room) in old money, tortoiseshell brown, gold grille and bakerlite knobs for the tuning of.
My Dad was in charge of programme selection, but we'd tune it out on the sly to hear ' Pick a the Pops' or 'Gear'.
Being the last of four lads and parents gone to work- I was always last to leave in the mornings and hunched over Nabisco cereal and white toast... my ears would prick at the voice of Alistair Cooke and his Letter from America.. where was Cambodia, who was agent orange and what the heck was Spiro Agnew?
We had no TV set - so the wireless was the hub, Listen With Mother, Three In A Row, The Archers and Junior Choice on weekend mornings.. The Wednesday Play at 8pm...and if I was good- supper and a nightime game.
What I lost in bed wetting and poor school grades, I made up in acknowledging songs and music.. the radio was central, bedtime I tuned into Radio Luxembourg and the Marlboro Country Show, on my Alba transistor... American Air force network stations on Long Wave, police messages and the shipping forecast before hitting the hay.. never forgot Mizzen Head, Dogger, Cromarty and German Byte!

My first semi-distinct memory of any radio broadcast is hearing updated scores as a six year old from the Grey Cup game on 29 November 1958 from Vancouver's Empire Stadium on the living room radio:



I mean, wow! I was listening in wonderment. This was big time to me! And to actually be able to get results from the game as it was being played instead of just the following day! (Our local TV-channel wasn't broadcasting the Grey Cup game and we didn't get a TV set until the summer of 1961 anyway.) It didn't occur to me at the time that by twisting the radio dial to 980 I might have even been able to get live play-by-play coverage....

By the following July I was buying/collecting Topps CFL cards which is still a treasured early memory. I remember the thrill, the magic I felt opening certain specific packs and where I was at the time. Here are some scans from my present day collection:















I've been a hardcore Canadian football fan ever since!

I don't care much for Faron Young's version and don't recall it getting much airplay.

Many differing songs and pieces of music got airplay and Mozarts forty I think charted-Morning Has Broken by Cat Stevens got ambushed by the Nuns and we had it in morning assembly!
