What Are You Listening To?

Time for a restart.

And to answer the question: I'm wondering that myself--my son and some friends are downstairs and I can only hear the thumping bass...

GP never got the respect he deserved in the states;
steamy, soul screaming locomotive R & B that rocked out with the
hottest white hot pub band of the late 70's, Brinsley Szwartz.
I was lucky... seeing them in '79 was to never forget seeing them.
Excellent live fare.

Hot Wire by Trapeze (1974). Steal a Mile shows that Mel Galley was a very good singer as well as being an excellent guitar player. He took over lead vocals after Glenn Hughes left the band, but was much underrated in both departments. Rob Kendrick also sings and plays guitar on the album - he later worked with Budgie.

Two CDs of ultra-rarities from '65 and '66: tracks for the Autumn and Scorpio labels plus loads of live cuts from Bay Area venues.

Re: What Are You Listening To?

Systematic Chaos, the 2009 version, although I am not sure how this differs from the 2007 original. Even for a progressive rock fan like me, some of the tracks are too long and in need of editing, the dungeons and dragons lyrics are tedious and someone should've told Mike Portnoy not to contribute 'vocals'. On the other hand, Constant Motion is very heavy and the instrumental section, from around the four minute mark, is amazing. The best track on the album is the only James LaBrie contribution, Porphets of War, showing that he should be writing much more for DT. By the mid-noughties, DT were tighter than ever and should've done better - this is an album that I only dig out occasionally for the aforementioned tracks.

Unfortunately, three years later, Portnoy left what was his own band for Avenged Sevenfold, which unsurprisingly did not work out. When he attempted to return to DT, they employed their lawyers to keep him out. Since then he has worked most fruitfully in projects involving Neal Morse or Billy Sheehan.

^ I cannot understand how he failed to get royalties for Dazed and Confused, when so many others like Willie Dixon, Howlin Wolf, Ritchie Valens and possibly Sonny Boy Williamson (or at least their estates or publishers) succeeded in out of court settlements.

Re: What Are You Listening To?

I first heard Wigwam by accident in the late seventies. I foolishly confused them with Kayak, about whom I had read several positive reviews, particularly of Royal Red Bouncer, and inadvertently bought the compilation album, Rumours On the Rebound. It was a blessing in disguise as I loved Wigwam from the first few notes of the first song, Freddie Are You Ready? As a matter of fact, there was not a bad track on the album and it was double vinyl. This led me to listen to as much as was possible by the band, but being Finnish their material was not not easy to find in those days. Pennies had to be saved and journeys made to the West End of London, which wasn't exactly a hardship. But, it wasn't until the proliferation of CDs that Wigwam albums started to appear in nearby record shops; the irony being that their days were numbered . . .

The internet revealed more Wigwam with Youtube clips, the DPRP website and various other sites, and thus I eventually came to Some Several Moons released in 2005. I have only listened to the whole album once, so it is difficult to be objective at this stage and I will reserve judgement until I've heard it a few more times. Admittedly, it did not have the effect of my first hearing of Rumours On the Rebound back in 1979. I am not enamoured with the cover design either, but a number of key personnel are in place, inlcuding English ex-patriate singer/songwriter Jim Pembroke and guitarist Pekka Rchardt.

As for Kayak, I did buy the still much-admired Royal Red Bouncer album many years later and have hardly played it at all.
