Re: J. Geils Band vs. ZZ Top!
I've seen both live and there is no comparison, J Geils wins.
Good match-up, cult status bands in the '70's known for great live shows. ZZ Top was certainly the leader in Texas blues/rock in the '70's and they were well respected. In the '80's, a subtle change started that culminated with the release of Eliminator in '83. Gone were the dirty Texas blues and in were synths, drum machines and shiny videos for MTV. Many articles have documented how Billy Gibbons orchestrated this calculated business move. The result was massive popularity and new fans that loved fuzzy guitars and a red hot rod. This album was a launching point for a new career. I remember seeing ZZ Top in the late '80's and was not impressed with either: A) all the off stage musicians that were not in view...or B) all the prerecorded music being used. J Geils Band never lost integrity. Their finale with Peter Wolf was '81's Freeze-Frame which was more pop and less bluesy than previous releases. That album upon further listening has just as many edgy tracks as it does radio friendly tracks. The thing for me, they didn't overhaul the band's history to produce one of the biggest selling albums of the era.

Re: J. Geils Band vs. ZZ Top!
Purely a personal choice, but I prefer ZZ Top.
Don't get me wrong, the J. Geils Band is pretty good too. (Although I must confess to being less familiar with their catalogue overall...) True story: Back when I was a wee lad of no more than 5 or 6, I had ZZ Top's first two albums and the very first J. Geils! (My dad used to work for a classic rock station and my parents provided me with a lot of interesting and cool stuff on vinyl!) |
