Music Note "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

.......I was pissed out of my head the other day and posted in the "Main Rock Lounge":

https://www.crf2.com/showthread.php?t=21176

Saying that I was just listening to:

"The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next - 1973"

And that the song "Faith Healer" still gets me going.

No comments at all, not even a bad one..!?!..

Re: "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

Not too familiar with Alex Harvey although I do have his version of Jacques Brel's song Next. Kind of over-the-top cabaret, I always liked Scott Walker's version, though I'm sure Brel's is the greatest.

Re: "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

I actually saw him back around '75 or '76 (fairly certain) but the memory of the show is tremendously vague now. They were not very high profile and their touring was intermittent, but I knew enough about them at the time to shell out the dough (prolly 4 or 5 bucks) for the show.

What I do remember was how wild and peculiar the whole set was. Alex Harvey was bouncing around the large club like a madman and I believe, wildly serenading the girls at the tables in some bizarre outfit as the band rocked. The brew was flowing, kegs I think, and it seemed as though the show had the agenda of a private party. Dwelling now upon this bit of hazy history, I wondered
if this was possibly some weird dream that just happened to have The Sensational Alex Harvey Band in it, but no, his archived touring schedules definitely had that city and time noted. A strange show indeed! Oh well, only in the 70's...

.......heyjoe and Krull.

.......i really do appreciate the knowledge of many of you guys about music trivia and backgrounds of bands etc. in this forum, like concerts you've been to and stuff, I really do..!..

But then you guys are so much older than me I guess..!..

Even though I can't compare with your knowledge and concerts you've been to and stuff, I know one thing.

"I was so much older then when I was young"

As far as I remember that wasn't from Alex Harvey but it's still the truth.......

Re: "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

Well, tommygun, you know what they say 'bout the 70's!
'If you remember it you weren't there'. It is fun to
share a little history though. I enjoy the stories too.

As for my age... well, thanks to those great awe-inspiring
years, I've conveniently forgotten 'bout that.

I've seen the reformed band about 3 times over the past few years. They've been great.

However, the last thing I heard was that Zal Cleminson (guitarist) had been getting a bit too big for his boots. This next story was actually printed in Classic Rock magazine so obviously has some truth.

The band were due to play a charity gig ealier this year along with a number of other bands. Zal turned around before said performance and told the rest of the band he wouldnt perform unless he was paid. They tried to convince him that as it was for charity NOBODY was getting paid. So when he continued to refuse the band went on and played without him, the tour manager filled in on guitar. The next day Zal announced his retirement from the music industry. Bizarre

So god knows what'll happen now. They were a very good live act, even without Alex.

I would've loved to have seen them play with Alex. Top, top band.

Music Note Re: "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

.......ever heard about "Tear Gas".?.

Qoute:
"""Tear Gas" was the final album by rock band "Tear Gas", after this album Alex Harvey joined the group which later went on to become The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Obviously, minus David Batchelor on vocals."""

I've just googled that quote.

Anyway, I got the album which is quiet allright:

"Tear Gas - Tear Gas - 1971".......

I LOVE the live version of Faith Healer. So many songs I really love, Anthem, Delilah, Swampsnake, Boston Tea Party. I wish I could of seen them in concert. Rest in Peace dear Alex.

Re: "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

... Being the youngest of four brothers it was hard not to hear these and many other bands emitting great sounds from their bedrooms - thus influencing me from the get-go.
Rock Drill is just about as progressive as you'll get with Alex Harvey, sadly Hugh McKenna had a fall out and was missing, Dolphins is the standout track and equally matches the excellent sleeve design depicting Jacob Epstein's sculpture..

Re: "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

From the David Field album design to the snarl of Action Strasse, this album was favoured by Marshall here(rubbing shoulders with Iggy Pop, Frank Zappa and Cpt. Beefheart) a Vertigo gatefold delight!

Re: "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

This album predominantly consisted of cover versions of songs by Leadbelly, Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper and The Osmonds!
They always seem to teeter on that 'Christopher Isherwood Cabaret' vibe.. this supports that.

Gamblin' Bar Room Blues - The Penthouse Tapes.

Re: "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

Song scribe Les Reed cited this as his favourite working of his song.. high praise indeed from a top selling live album.

Delilah - Live.

A young Martin Rushent engineered on this, once again a delivery of varying styles and textures.. I stick to this anthem like shit to a blanket..

Re: "The Sensational Alex Harvey Band"

Once again David Bachelor was at the helm producing.. but failed to prevent Alex from walking after this session - nice sleeve photography from Gered Mankowitz.. the funk sound of '76 is clearly audible on many tracks. This is my preferred cut.

Sirocco - SAHB Stories.
