Re: This Day In Rock History

This Day In Rock History: June 28th

1969 Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Nice, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Ten Years After, Taste, The Liverpool Scene and Chicken Shack all appeared at The Bath Festival of Blues in England, with DJ John Peel. Tickets cost 18/6. The festival proved very popular, selling out all 30,000 tickets in the first week, surprising both the townsfolk and the promoters. The only major problem occurred when the Nice's use of bagpipers caused the stage to collapse.

1968 The Rascals are awarded their third Gold record for the Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati composition, "A Beautiful Morning". The record rose to number 3 in the US.

1968 Aretha Franklin appears on the cover of Time magazine just as her L.P. "Aretha: Lady Soul" reaches #2 on the Billboard chart.

1973 One of the first British Invasion revival concerts was held at Madison Square Garden in New York. The show featured Gerry And The Pacemakers, Wayne Fontana, The Searchers and Herman's Hermits. The last time any of them were on the US record charts was in early 1968 when "I Can Take or Leave Your Loving" was a #22 hit for Herman's Hermits.

2021 Former Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton passed away at the age of 74. Lawton joined the band in 1976, replacing original lead singer David Byron just as the band was working on its 10th album, "Firefly". A year later, the LP "Innocent Victim" would produce the huge, international hit, "Free Me". Though Lawton would leave the band in 1979, he remained on good terms with his former bandmates.
