1970 On this day, Friday the 13th, Black Sabbath released their debut self-titled studio album on Vertigo records in the UK. Peaking at No.8 on the charts, the album has been recognised as the first main album to be credited with the development of the heavy metal genre. 2002 American country singer, songwriter Waylon Jennings died in his sleep after a lengthy fight with diabetes. He was bassist for Buddy Holly following the break-up of The Crickets. Released a series of duet albums with Willie Nelson in the late 1970s. Scored the 1980 US No.21 single 'Theme From The Dukes Of Hazzard', he was also the narrator on the television series. 2002 English drummer and singer Mick Tucker with glam rock band Sweet died of leukaemia aged 54. Sweet had the 1973 UK No.1 single 'Blockbuster', plus 14 other UK Top 40 singles. 2004 Doris Troy, the big voiced singer of the 1963 #10 hit "Just One Look", died of emphysema at the age of 67. She was working as an usherette at the Apollo Theatre when she was discovered by James Brown and went on to work with The Rolling Stones, Humble Pie, Pink Floyd, George Harrison, Dusty Springfield, Nick Drake and Carly Simon. 2015 Leslie Gore, who placed eleven songs on the Billboard Top 40 between 1963 and 1967, including "It's My Party", "Judy's Turn To Cry", She's A Fool" and "You Don't Own Me", died of cancer at the age of 68. 2018 Barbara Ann Alston, vocalist for The Crystals on their hits "Da Doo Ron Ron", "Then He Kissed Me" and "There's No Other Like My Baby", died at the age of 74 after contracting influenza. source: classicbands |

1973 The Rock ensemble Free, who reached #2 in the UK and #4 in the US in 1970 with "All Right Now", play their final show at Florida's Hollywood Sportatorium. Vocalist Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke will move on to form Bad Company. 1976 The Eagles release their "Greatest Hits 1971 - 1975" album. To this day, it is still one of the best selling records of all time. 2008 Little Richard got a standing ovation from a crowd of 2,400 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville without playing a single note. The 75 year old Rock 'n Roll pioneer was seated at the rear of the auditorium during a concert by The Temptations and The Four Tops when he was introduced by The Temp's Otis Williams. source: classicbands |
