Re: Chicago versus Santana!

Very tough choice,,,,,,to me the first 6 studio albums by each are very good , after that they both have a long history of so-so work...some hits and some misses.
Need to sleep on it.

Re: Chicago versus Santana!

I love Santana but Chicago Transit Authority thru Chicago XI had the Terry Kath magic. Maybe not the entire album but somewhere on it you had to sit back and say wow. Carlos Santana is a skilled guitarist but Terry Kath was in a different class. This song (Imo) may have Kath's best studio guitar solo ever. The man's playing was as Crazy Eddie would say, INSANE.

Re: Chicago versus Santana!

Santana for me. Yes, Terry Kath was great, but there's not enough of him to get me through a Chicago album.

I had to play Colour My World at a few weddings, and that was enough for me to avoid Chicago's music forever.

As for Santana, if you're not sold, watch this video. It's long, but you won't be bored. I'm not a big fan of drum solos, but I make an exception for Michael Shrieve. Check him out, starting at 4:25. He was all of 21 years old when this was filmed.

Exclamation Re: Chicago versus Santana!

For me it's Santana, easily! The Latino percussion heavy sound of Santana drew me in from their very first LP in 1969.

Meanwhile I'm no fan of jazzy, brass heavy tunes which characterize Chicago's sound. While I really like their take on I'm a Man, after that the only tracks I've heard from their catalogue that I even vaguely like are 25 or 6 to 4 and Questions 67 and 68.

Nonetheless, I thought a match-up between the two bands would be a good one so I put one together!

Is it just Chicago or most traditional 60s/70s jazz, rock, horn bands?

I don't like any of them. Blood, Sweat and Tears I particularly dislike.

In fact, my least favourite period of the Rolling Stones is the Mick Taylor years from 1971-74 when many of their tracks featured prominent horns. Yes, there were some gems, e.g. Brown Sugar, Bitch and basically the whole Sticky Fingers LP, but there was very little on their next three LPs that I really liked.
