Re: Covers that are better than the originals!

^^ Great tune but you missed one of the more important versions of the song. In the late 1980s the California Raisin Advisory Board created a quartet of singing and dancing Claymation figures to promote raisins from California. Drummer Buddy Miles was chosen to be the lead singer of the quartet performing as Buddy Raisin, doing the lead singing covering Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” "The California Raisins Sing The Hits" sold over a million copies. Many may already (or not) know that Buddy was a famous rock drummer since the late 60s. His most famous gig was as the drummer for Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsys. And yes he's on the New Years eve album recorded at the Fillmore East (1969/1970). Many don't know just how prolific Buddy Miles was. In his career he played with some of the most iconic guitarist including the mentioned Jimi Hendrix and Mike Bloomfield, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin. I also think he released one of the best 'live' albums ever, "Buddy Miles - Live".

Re: Covers that are better than the originals!

I'm willing to bet good money that 95% (or more) don't know that this is the original recording of this song.

The covered version most known to most. Imo, no comparison to the original.

(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66 by the Nat King Cole Trio was released in 1946:

A cover by Bing Crosby with the Andrews Sisters was released later in 1946 and got to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 later in 1946:

A cover by Perry Como was included on his Como Swings LP released in 1959:

All horrible swing renditions in my opinion.

A much better version by Chuck Berry was released in 1961:

An excellent cover by the Rolling Stones was included on their self-titled debut LP which was released on 16 April 1964:

Another excellent cover by Them was included on their The Angry Young Them LP which was released on 11 June 1965:

I'm Movin' On by Hank Snow was released in May 1950:

It was a huge hit getting to #1 on the Billboard Country chart and staying there for 21 weeks.

A cover by Ray Charles was released in 1959:

A cover by the Rolling Stones was recorded on the Joe Loss Pop radio show on 10 April 1964:

Another live rendition of I'm Moving On was included on their Got Live if You Want It! EP which was released on 11 June 1965:

A perhaps slightly remastered version of the above track was then also included on their December's Children LP which was released on 4 December 1965.

I much prefer the Stones' renditions. It's not even close.

Music Note Re: Covers that are better than the originals!

Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan was released on 30 August 1965:

Much critically acclaimed, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the song as #373 in their "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

It was Johnny Winter though who took the track into the stratosphere with the cover included in his Second Winter LP released on 27 October 1969:

It became one Johnny Winter's signature pieces and could even be termed career defining.

Will You Love Me Tomorrow? by the Shirelles was released in November 1960 and became a huge hit getting to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100:

The song was covered by numerous artists over the ensuing decades but none of the versions even came close to the original until a bilingual one by Leslie Grace was released in 2012:

Grace's version got to #1 on the Billboard Tropical Songs chart as well as #1 on the Latin Airplay chart. At the age of seventeen she became the youngest female artist to accomplish the feat.
