The Unheard 'Abbey Road': An Exclusive Preview of Beatles' Expanded Final Masterpiece

The Unheard 'Abbey Road': An Exclusive Preview of Beatles' Expanded Final Masterpiece

Fifty years ago today, on August 8th, 1969, the Beatles walked back and forth across a street they knew well: Abbey Road. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr lined up and crossed a few times, while a cop held up traffic, right outside the studio where they were already booked to show up for work that day. The whole photo session took only 10 minutes. Yet this became their most iconic image: sky of blue, trees of green. It sums up the sunny confidence of the most popular album the Beatles ever made — which also turned out to be the last. Abbey Road turned a zebra-stripe crosswalk on an ordinary London street into holy ground. Oh, that magic feeling.

Fifty years later, the Abbey Road story takes a new turn with the revelatory Super Deluxe Edition, which drops on September 27th in time for the anniversary. It sheds new light on the essential weirdness of this music — how did the Beatles create such warmth and beauty while they were in the middle of breaking up? “It’s the Last Supper,” producer Giles Martin, son of the late George Martin, tells Rolling Stone. “It’s having great sex with an ex-girlfriend. They said, ‘Let’s do one last great thing.’”

‘Abbey Road’ Vs. ‘Let It Be’: Which Was the Beatles’ Last Album?

Settling an age-old debate

So what’s the final Beatles album? Abbey Road or Let It Be? If you’re a Beatles fan, you’ve had at least one chemically-assisted late-night argument about this (because that’s what we do). Abbey Road was the last they recorded, but Let It Be was the last they released. So did the greatest band ever bid farewell with “Her Majesty” or “Get Back”? Does the story end with Paul saying, “Someday I’m gonna make her mine,” or John saying, “I hope we passed the audition”? It’s always been a hot-button philosophical question for fans, the kind that defines what kind of Beatlemaniac you are. Though it may seem like an arcane debate, damn right it matters. Because it’s the Beatles. And what the hell, it’s Friday. So let’s argue: Which album truly counts as the grand finale?

Hear The Beatles’ ‘Oh! Darling’ Remixed for ‘Abbey Road’ Anniversary

The song will appear on the forthcoming reissue of the 1969 album

Producer Giles Martin has remixed The Beatles’ song “Oh! Darling” ahead of the 50th anniversary of the band’s 1969 album Abbey Road. Martin, the son of late Beatles producer George Martin, created the new 2019 mix of the track for the forthcoming deluxe reissues Abbey Road, set be released September 27th via Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe.

The record label has also shared a second version of “Oh! Darling,” this one a previously unreleased “Take 4” version of the song. The take, from the band’s Abbey Road sessions, includes an overdubbed Hammond organ from Billy Preston.

Unearthed Audio Reveals Beatles Discussed ‘Abbey Road’ Follow-Up

John Lennon envisions album with four songs apiece (and two for Ringo Starr “if he wants them”) in contentious audio revealed by band historian-author Mark Lewisohn

In a newly unearthed recording from 1969, the Beatles’ principal songwriters discuss tentative plans for a follow-up to their final LP Abbey Road, a revelation that shifts the canonical narrative of that album’s recording sessions and the band’s eventual break-up.

The tape — which dates back to September 8th, 1969, two weeks before Abbey Road‘s release — features a contentious conversation between John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison at Apple headquarters in London’s Savile Row. With Ringo Starr hospitalized and undergoing tests for intestinal issues, his bandmates talk about recording another album and a potential single for the Christmas market.

Hear Beatles’ Unreleased ‘Come Together’ Outtake From ‘Abbey Road’ Reissue

Band also shares new 2019 mix of album opener from producer Giles Martin

The Beatles have shared two versions of their classic Abbey Road opener, “Come Together,” a previously unreleased studio outtake and a new mix of the song. Both versions will appear on the forthcoming 50th anniversary reissue of Abbey Road, out September 27th.

The outtake, labeled “Take 5,” offers an intriguing snapshot of John Lennon working out the vocals to the song. The performance is raw and thrilling — like when Lennon’s voice cracks at the line, “He holds you in his arms, you can feel his disease” — and even a bit goofy, as the song suddenly slips away from the band and Lennon’s voice drops from a wail to a drawl as he ad-libs what sounds like, “He roller-coaster, he got early warnin’ … he’s got teenage lyrics.”

The 2019 mix of “Come Together,” meanwhile, is part of a complete album remix done by producer Giles Martin (son of the late George Martin) and engineer Sam Okell. The mix will be available in stereo, 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos.
