I like Spirit but for this poll it's Mountain by 2 miles.

Re: Mountain versus Spirit!
Spirit... more influential imho in the world of music.. better songwriters also....and a band that had many styles married into their overall sound.
Hendrix played with and taught Randy California how to play in an earlier band ...the drummer was a jazz player before Spirit and played with Adderley and Monk and also with Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal in a blues band.....and Ferguson was a talented singer and player who later formed Jo Jo Gunne....and even though the lawsuit failed Page and Zep 'borrowed' the melody line from Taurus that Locke-keyboard player for Spirit- wrote. (Spirit had toured early on with Zep before Page wrote Stairway) 12 Dreams by Spirit is a classic of psych and protoprog. Mountain is a good hard rock band and one of my favorites from that time but other than the two decent lp's they did they really never had any meanighful impact on music...imho. |

![]() This is a really tough one for me because I really like both bands. The negative for me with respect to Mountain is that their tracks do degenerate on occasion to heavy metal divorced from the blues of which I'm not a fan.
But the plus associated with Mountain is that more of their tracks ascend to an ethereal level such as the last three I posted above plus the earlier Look to the Wind. I therefore opted for Mountain. ![]()

Re: Mountain versus Spirit!
I saw Mountain in 1970-1 in Chicago...good show ..never saw Spirit unfortunately. The original band broke up after 12 Dreams in the end of 1970.
IMHO that lp is better ,more creative and diverse than anything Mountain did even though Queen and Sleighride are good hard rock albums. Mountain was a one trick pony albeit it was a good trick. ![]() |
