Woodstock 50 co-founder insists anniversary festival still on

Woodstock 50 will go on despite the loss of a major financial partner, according to the organizers of the beleaguered anniversary event.

In a statement released late Monday, Woodstock 50 co-founder Michael Lang and Woodstock LLC said they were "committed to ensuring that the 50th anniversary of Woodstock is marked with a festival deserving of its iconic name and place in American history and culture."

They said that would continue despite the announcement earlier in the day that a financial investor was dropping out of the event, scheduled for Aug 16-18 in Watkins Glen, New York.

Re: Woodstock 50th Anniversary Planned

Dear Woodstock Friends

It seems in a way that history is repeating itself. In July of 1969 we lost our site in Walkill and with only a month to go we managed to move to Bethel. Woodstock was going to happen no matter what!

This time around, Woodstock’s new hometown, Dix & Watkins Glen, NY and New York State have been really wonderful. I went door to door to talk to the neighbors. Some remembered Summer Jam back in ’73 and were worried about history repeating itself. But they opened their doors to us and we talked it out. Many of those people have reached out over the last 24 hours with messages of hope and encouragement.
The venue, Watkins Glen International, have been totally supportive and professional.

Yesterday, our financial partner, Dentsu-Aegis, made the decision to pull out and informed us that they were cancelling the festival at the same time they let the press release go public.
We have yet to understand why they would try to prevent the festival from happening by seemingly undermining us in this way. It is one thing to decide for oneself that it is best to move on, but it is entirely another thing to try and close the door on us.

Yesterday, I couldn’t help but relive that moment 50 years ago – it was “ déjà vu all over again”!
Supporting the principles of activism and sustainability are too important to be derailed by shortsighted partners.
We continue our work with NYS, Schuyler County and various parties to keep things on track.

Woodstock never belonged to Dentsu, so they don’t have a right to cancel it.
Woodstock belongs to the people and it always will.
We don’t give up and Woodstock 50 will take place and will be a blast!

Thanks for Listening, Michael

Woodstock 50 Loses Production Partner Superfly, Putting Festival in Jeopardy

Events company also produces Bonnaroo and Outside Lands and their departure could be “catastrophic” for the festival, one source says

Days after Woodstock 50’s financial backer announced it was canceling the festival, its production partner has severed its ties with the event. The entertainment company Superfly, which co-produces Bonnaroo and Outside Lands, confirmed to Rolling Stone on Wednesday that it is no longer involved in the venture.

Woodstock 50th anniversary concert canceled — or is it?

The future of Woodstock 50, a three-day concert marking the 50th anniversary of the original 1969 Woodstock music festival, looks bleak after its primary financial investor said it had pulled its funding and canceled the event.

But one of the festival’s co-founders says the show must go on.

I hope it's not! My heart would be broken if I didn't get to see Miley ride an inflatable dong on to stage.

Woodstock 50 Organizers Open Legal Fight Against Former Investor to Reclaim Festival

Filing seeks to force financier Dentsu Aegis to hand over $17.8 million in funds

The organizers of Woodstock 50 have filed legal paperwork against Dentsu Aegis, the financier that canceled the festival last week, with the Supreme Court of the State of New York. The paperwork — a petition for an injunction — asks for the Court to place a gag order on Dentsu from speaking with the media, state officials, performers and others, force the company to return $17.8 million to the festival’s bank account, compel it to continue work on the fest, be more transparent in its accounting and add in anything the judge would feel is fair. Attorney Marc Kasowitz submitted the paperwork on Wednesday.

Woodstock 50 festival says show back on after winning court ruling

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Organizers of a three-day concert marking the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival said on Wednesday the show was back on after winning a court ruling against a lead investor.

Woodstock 50, planned for Aug. 16-18 at the Watkins Glen motor racing venue in New York state with a lineup that includes rapper Jay-Z, and pop singer Miley Cyrus, was thrown into doubt last month after Japanese investors announced they had decided to “cancel the event.”

New York State Supreme Court Judge Barry Ostrager on Wednesday ruled that Amplifi Live, a unit of Japanese company Dentsu Inc, “does not have the right to unilaterally cancel the Festival.”

13 Groovy Facts About Woodstock For Its 50th Anniversary

From August 15-18, 1969, an estimated 400,000 spectators attended Woodstock, a music event held in Bethel, New York, that quickly became a defining moment in the counter-cultural movement of the era. Nearly three dozen acts performed over the course of four days, ranging from the Grateful Dead to the Who to Jimi Hendrix, who closed out the show. With the 50th anniversary of this '60s milestone approaching (and various Woodstock 2019 events in the works), we're looking at some of the things about the festival you might have missed.

Famous Woodstock 'couple' will return for 50th anniversary event

The photo is instantly recognizable: a young woman in big sunglasses clinging to a young man wrapped in a blanket, in a field in the middle of the masses who came to Woodstock in 1969.

The image became a cultural touchstone when it appeared on the cover of the "Woodstock" album.

The two young lovers who stood on that field wrapped in a muddy, colorful quilt are Nick and Bobbi Ercoline of Pine Bush.

“It was all wonderful because we were 20 and in love,” said Bobbi Ercoline, who was a school nurse in 1969; Nick worked for the housing authority.

The Ercolines will be back where it all took place, in Bethel, New York, in August. The couple will participate in the Bethel Woods Center For The Arts celebration of the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, Aug. 15-18.

2019 Woodstock festival still in doubt with 75 days to go

The 2019 Woodstock festival is not “canceled,” but the 50th anniversary concert in Upstate New York is still in doubt with just 75 days to go.

For starters, Woodstock 50 tickets still haven’t gone on sale for the three-day event, scheduled for Aug. 16-18 at Watkins Glen International raceway in Watkins Glen, N.Y., with a lineup that includes Jay-Z, Santana, Miley Cyrus, The Killers, Chance the Rapper, John Fogerty, Janelle Monae, Dead & Company, Halsey, and Imagine Dragons. Tickets were originally scheduled to go on sale April 22, but were delayed due to a late application for a mass gathering permit and chaos behind the scenes.

Time and money now appear to be the biggest threats against Woodstock 50 as co-founder and 50th anniversary organizer Michael Lang faces off with former investor Dentsu Aegis Network in court. Dentsu attempted to “cancel” the festival on April 29 after capacity at Watkins Glen was reduced to 75,000, but Lang won a court battle May 15 to continue with the show.

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports both sides are headed to arbitration as arguments continue over funding, the right to control the festival, and responsibilities including a still-pending permit with the New York state Department of Health. Dentsu doesn’t have to return $17.8 million to the festival account and doesn’t have to continue funding the event, the state Supreme Court ruled last month.

Woodstock 50 Loses Festival Grounds as Organizers Scramble for Permits

“Watkins Glen International terminated the site license for Woodstock pursuant to provisions of the contract,” a rep for the racetrack says. “As such, WGI will not be hosting the Woodstock 50 Festival

The beleaguered Woodstock 50 festival has hit another hurdle. A little over two months ahead of the planned August event at Watkins Glen International, the venue has pulled out of its contract with its organizers.

“Watkins Glen International terminated the site license for Woodstock pursuant to provisions of the contract,” a rep for the racetrack said in a statement. “As such, WGI will not be hosting the Woodstock 50 Festival.”

A rep for Woodstock 50 did not comment on the decision.

Re: Woodstock 50th Anniversary Planned

Woodstock organizers “in discussions with another venue to host” 50th anniversary festival

With just 67 days to go until Woodstock 50 is scheduled to take place, founder Michael Lang is without a venue, a production company, and an artist lineup whose legality is very much in flux. And yet, the Woodstock co-founder refuses to put the anniversary event out of its misery.

Late Monday afternoon, Watkins Glen International hammered the latest nail into Woodstock’s coffin with the announcement that it would no longer host the festival for this August. According to a statement released by the venue, “Watkins Glen International terminated the site license for Woodstock pursuant to provisions of the contract. As such, WGI will not be hosting the Woodstock 50 Festival.”

A short time later, CID Entertainment, which previously replaced Superfly Presents as the event’s producer, announced that it too was ceasing involvement. “CID Entertainment had been engaged to provide enhanced camping, travel packages and transportation for Woodstock 50. Given developments, we can confirm that CID is no longer involved in Woodstock 50 in any capacity,” CID Entertainment’s Dan Berkowitz told Billboard in a statement.
