I'd argue that a proper boxed set should include at least three CD's quite simply because two CD releases in simple CD paks are so common that a two CD "boxed set" doesn't strike me as any kind of a big deal even if there's a nice box. In fact if it's a five or more CD set, whether it's included in a spiffy box, a generic cardboard mailing box or consists of a bunch of CD cases simply wrapped in shrink wrap is irrelevant. That much music and it's a box set in my book.

I bought it for the box art basically because after looking it over I really didn't know what to do with it. I don't much like it as a Stones' release. First of all these are CD's and I'm first and foremost a vinyl guy. Secondly it's in mono and I'm a stereo buff. Moreover one single track per CD is just silly. I've been basically an album only buyer right from the start of my record buying days in 1967. And to top it off the box is too tall to fit into my CD rack!

As a result it's packed away and thus well hidden in the house somewhere. Oh well. Like I say, at least the box art was worth an extended look.

It's among my top priorities when it comes to box sets. I have only the first CD:

Yes I have the whole set...4 discs. I also have the 20 disc Rubble set which is Brit psych pop. I have a 4 disc set also of US-UK psych called The Psychedelic Years Revisited and several single disc psych things which aren't box sets.

Twenty discs?! Wow!

What kind of CD player do you have?

I have a single disc medium priced Sony player that's about 10 years old.
A few years back I thought about getting a 5 or 10 disc changer but I never listen to music for that long anyway.
The Rubble box set is very compact in design.

My Marantz CC4001 CD player has a five CD changer built into it which is plenty for me:

Any more than five CD changing capability and what you have is a storage unit which I neither need nor want.

I see you failed in that endeavour. That had to be a pricey one!

Question Re: Box Sets

How many LPs or CDs are there in that James Brown set?

I bought this 9-CD set some fifteen years ago:

It's guaranteed to delight any baby boomer or classic rock fan! While I prefer vinyl for serious listening, CDs are best suited for precisely this kind of box set, i.e. one that provides hours and hours of music while you sit back and relax with a good book in a La-Z-Boy.

Come to think of it, it was released by PYE in '65 , but probably it appears on the Reprise version (U.S.).
