This Day In Rock History: August 8th


1992: During a Guns N’ Roses/Metallica concert at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Metallica frontman James Hetfield suffered second & third degree burns to his left arm after stepping too close to the pyrotechnics causing them to end their set early. Guns N’ Roses also cut their set short when Axl Rose claimed he had a sore throat & a riot broke out.

1968 Deep Purple, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Ten Years After, The Nice, Ginger Baker, Traffic, John Mayall, Spencer Davis, Taste, Jerry Lee Lewis and Arthur Brown all appeared at the 3 day National Jazz & Blues Festival, Kempton Park Racecourse, Sunbury On Thames, England.

1995 Jerry Garcia guitarist and singer from The Grateful Dead died from a heart attack at the Serenity Knolls rehabilitation clinic in San Francisco aged 53. Garcia co-founded the New Riders of the Purple Sage and also released several solo albums. He was well known for his distinctive guitar playing and was ranked 13th in Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarist's of All Time"

1980: AC/DC reached the top of the U.K. Album Chart with Back in Black which spent two weeks on top of the chart. The album peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 Album Chart in the U.S. & went on to sell 45 million copies worldwide, making it the second biggest selling album of all time.

1986: Queen performed their final concert with Freddie Mercury at the Knebworth in England in front of 120,000 people.

2008 US singer-songwriter Isaac Hayes died at his home in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 65. Police were called to his home after his wife found him unconscious. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Hayes won an Oscar for the 1971 hit Theme From Shaft as was also known as the voice of Chef from the hit cartoon show, South Park. He was married four times and had 12 children.

1967 Small Faces, The Move, Marmalade, Paul Jones, Pink Floyd, Amen Corner, Donovan, Zoot Money, Cream, Jeff Beck, John Mayall, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown all appeared at this years UK Reading festival. An advance 3 day ticket cost £2. Arthur Brown's trademark flaming helmet burnt out of control and organizer Harold Pendleton's father-in-law had to douse the flames with a pint of beer.

1972 Alice Cooper was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'School's Out'. The bands only UK No.1, which was also a No.7 hit on the US chart. Cooper has said he was inspired to write the song when answering the question, "What's the greatest three minutes of your life?". Cooper said: "There's two times during the year. One is Christmas morning, the next one is the last three minutes of the last day of school."

1989 The two day Moscow Music Peace Festival was held at The Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Russia. Western Acts who appeared included Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Skid Row and The Scorpions. This was the first time that an audience had been allowed to stand up and dance at a stadium rock concert in the Soviet Union. Previous to this, all concerts had to be seated.

1949 Musician/film score composer Mark Knopfler (frontman for Dire Straits) is born in Glasgow, Scotland.

1991 Metallica release their fifth album, which is self-titled but commonly known as The Black Album. It goes to #1 in eight countries, including America, where it sells 16 million copies.

A cover of Ian Hunter's "Once Bitten Twice Shy" puts Great White into the Top 10 (#5) on the pop chart. 1989
