Do Any Song Lyrics Stab You in the Heart?

Was listening to some Tracy Chapman last night; there's a line in the song 'Subcity' which stabs right to my heart, brings a big lump into my throat and a tear or two to my eye:
'Give Mr President my honest regards, for disregarding me'.
Even typing it makes me fill up

Does anyone else get this response from just the odd line from a song?

WOW. I haven't ever heard these words before but they stab me.

Also: 'You can fall for chains of silver, you can fall for chains of gold, You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold'.

Re: Do Any Song Lyrics Stab You in the Heart?

This one is in German, I'm translating it. the song is Nur zu Besuch (Just visiting) by Die Toten Hosen, one of my all-time favourites. The singer describes his time spent at his mother's grave.

And this way I am still speaking with you as always
One day we will have all the time in the world again
Then we will se each other again
You can try to arrange, if you would like to,
That on that day the sun also shines on my grave

This one too:

"They're selling razor blades and mirrors in the street
I pray that when I'm coming down you'll be asleep.
If I ever hurt you, your revenge will be complete,
Because I'm scum, and I'm your son, I've come undone".

Re: Do Any Song Lyrics Stab You in the Heart?

And this, by Bob Dylan. Can't remember what the song is called, but it's about injustice as many of his songs are:

'You who philosophise disgrace, and criticize fears
Bury the rag deep in your face
For now's the time for your tears'.

If anyone knows what that song is called please let me know cos it's bugging me. Think its something like The Ballad of Hattie (something).

Should I hate a man for the shade of his skin,
Or the shape of his eyes or the shape I'm in?
Should I hate them because they have our jobs today?
No, I hate the man who sent the jobs away.

Re: Do Any Song Lyrics Stab You in the Heart?

I love Tracy Chapman. Her music is so moving and it touches close to home for people like me. She is from Ohio. I would love to run into her in a mall somewhere.

I am obsessed with Edwin McCain because he is an amazing lyricist, songwriter and a nice fellow.

This is the last verse of Edwin's "Wino's Lullaby." The song is about a musician on the road living the life drunk while his woman is at home all alone.

"Well I drag myself from the madness
And follow my heart back home.
This woman, she's been waiting
And feeling awfully alone.
We suffer here in the silence
As she is starting to cry
I'm falling asleep to the melody
Of the wino's lullaby.
----
Everything I Own
Bread

Vs 2.
You taught me how to love
what it's of, what it's of
You never said too much
But still you showed the way
And I knew from watching you.
Nobody else could ever know
The part of me that can't let go...

And I will give anything I own
Give up my life, my heart, my home
And I will give anything I own
Just to have you back again...

Isn't that song awesome. I have loved it since I was a preteen.

Great choice! I didn't know there were any other James McMurtry fans here (other than APageMark). He has a million great lines like that.

Re: Do Any Song Lyrics Stab You in the Heart?

This whole album does it for me:

His life is one of the most tragic stories you will every read and his lyrics reflect it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_C._Frank

Here is one example:

Blues Run the Game Lyrics
Written by Jackson C.Frank

Catch a boat to England, baby,
Maybe to Spain,
Wherever I have gone,
Wherever I've been and gone,
Wherever I have gone
The blues have run the game.

Send out for whisky, baby,
Send out for gin,
Me and room service, honey,
Me and room service, babe,
Me and room service
Well, we're living a life of sin

When I ain't drinking, baby,
You are on my mind,
When I ain't sleeping, honey,
When I ain't sleeping, Mama,
When I ain't sleeping
Well you know you'll find me crying.

Catch a boat to England, baby,
Maybe to Spain,
Wherever I have gone,
Wherever I've been and gone,
Wherever I have gone
The blues have run the game.

Living is a gamble, baby,
Loving's much the same,
Wherever I have played,
Wherever I throw those dice,
Wherever I have played
The blues have run the game.

Maybe when I'm older, baby,
Someplace down the line,
I'll wake up older,
So much older, Mama,
Wake up older
And I'll just stop all my trying.

Catch a boat to England, baby,
Maybe to Spain,
Wherever I have gone,
Wherever I've been and gone,
Wherever I have gone
The blues, they're all the same.

Scared little girl
Watching Aladdin on TV
Amanda always cries
When you yell at me

Yeah- please don't yell at me

Climb up all those stairs
Close the door
Doesn't want to
Hear us fighting anymore

Yeah, better call it a day

It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over, she's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever
