The Monkees...but really, I don't think they were all that sugar-coated except for the first two albums.

The Jackson 5 may have had more talent per se but I dig the Monkees' music much more.

Hmmm, these two are pretty equal in my mind. I'm gonna take the Jackson 5 by a slight margin.

I agree, even though I wouldn't call them completely ''sugar coated'' music and I wouldn't put them on the same level as the Jackson 5. If you dig deeper in the The Monkees catalogue, you'll find some of their best songs weren't necessarily their hits, unlike the Jackson 5...

So, it's The Monkees, no contest - they had the hit plus great album tracks to back it up, like...

Papa Gene's Blues
Take A Giant Step
Look Out (Here Comes Tommorow)
I Don't Think You Know Me
I'll Spend My Life With You
For Pete's Sake
Words
The Door Into Summer
Love Is Only Sleeping
What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round

Re: Jackson 5 vs. The Monkees

I just can't bring myself to take the Monkees all that seriously. Yeah there are some great songs, but it was a made for TV creation with a stable of top flight writers. Even though I like a lot of those songs, I feel uncomfortable rankingf them over the Jacksons.

Nesmith wrote and recorded his own songs/ The Monkees began working as a band on their third record called Headquarters and also wrote as a band and toured live/ The Jackson 5 did not write their own songs though they started I think after Mowtown. Very similar stories for both groups but one had a T.V. show

Actually, remember the Jackson 5 had a cartoon for a couple of years in the early 70's. A little different situation though - the Jackson 5 had a show that capitalized on their music success...the Monkees had a music career that spun off of their TV show.
