![]() When I first heard tell of Flo & Eddie some fifteen years ago, my reaction was "Huh?! Who the hell are Flo & Eddie?" I've resented that moniker ever since. Quite smply it's a transparent attempt to crystallize the Turtles down to those two specific members which is simply unacceptable.

Kaylan and Volman started the band as an outgrowth of an even earlier one. None of the original 'well known hits' were written by the Turtles ,but by other songwriters etc. They, Volman and gang, did write some good album tracks from 66 -70...but they broke up in 1970, and the 'original other 3 members' left in '68 btw...others were invited to join to basically back up Volman and Kaylan who later joined Zappa's touring band as singers. After Zappa was hurt in an accident they started Flo and Eddie (1971-now) to have something to do. They used The Turtles name in 1983 to tour again but by that time none of the other original members probably wanted to tour with them...I don't think this was about cutting anyone out since Kaylan and Volman were the heart of The Turtles to begin with by all accounts. IMHO...the Flo and Eddie albums are better than the Turtles early albums......certainly more clever. BTW...I'm not an expert on all of this but one of my very good friends from Chicago, IL tried to be a singer-songwriter back in the 80's and met Volman and Kaylan and became friends with them so most of story is from him. But Wiki has pretty much the same tale. Having said all that I like Spoonful better than the orignal Turtles mostly due to Summer iN The City but they both had some nice tracks back in the day. The Flo and Eddie lp's are quite fun if you give them a chance...tongue in cheek stuff...Zappa influence?, maybe but the lyrics to Elenore were done by Flo and Eddie and they are given credit for it. ![]() |

Re: The Lovin' Spoonful versus the Turtles!
I cant believe the Turtles are losing this one. I thought they would be way more popular and digestable than the Lovin Spoonful.

Re: The Lovin' Spoonful versus the Turtles!
IMHO both bands are not that important in the overall scheme of rock history...and that's not meant to be a knock on either.
Both had some 'hits' and were popular in the late 60's.....but neither meant a great deal to me at the time. |
